i already have the case, ram and power supply, but what do you think of this system?
Intel Core 2 Duo E6550
Asus P5K Intel P35
OCZ 4GB (2x2GB) PC2-5400C5 Dual Channel

later on in the year i will add 2 graphics cards (e.g. 2x3870).. ps does anyone know what/when the netx ati cards are coming out?..

EDIT>> THAT syetem or this system:

Intel Core 2 Duo E6550
Asus P5N-E SLi nForce 650
OCZ 4GB (2x2GB) PC2-5400C5 Dual Channel

Sli graphics cards , (probably dual 8800gt, or similar as times change)?..

so what i'm really asking, is do i plan for SLI, or plan for crossfire?.. at the moment imo ati have their pants round their ankles.. but have they got any tricks up their sleeves? or is it plain sailing for nvidia?..

I prefer ATI/AMD so I would go Crossfire...

With the 3xxx series you can have upto four GFX card on the mobo (if mobo surports it) for that reason I would start stocking up on 3xxx series;)

Even if you only get two on the board then you can always add another two in a years time etc... but then the next gen cards will be out etc...

do you know when ati's next release will be?.. / what it may be ... i will be gettign a new graphcis card/cards later next year..

(aren't the only crossfirex motherboards AMD?..)

Nada, there are Intel Crossfire boards... but there are no Xfire or CrossfireX yet I don't think. (Xfire or CrossfireX is the 4 GFX card mobos)

Im not sure when the new ATi cards are coming out but I don't think it's going to be this year...

Also, Nvidia may be bringing out a 4 GFX card soloution, I would imagine they would have to if ATI are doing it.... Or put my GPU cores on the one card.... Who knows?

When are you looking to buy and build?

P.S. I say Xfire and CrossfireX because I don't know which name is right, I belive CrossfireX is the name for 4 GFX card capable boards.

Edit: Just seen you said CrossfireX... I belive AMD are the only people to have them atm but are you going to buy four right now?

i'l be leaving the graphcis card side of things till june time when all my exams r finished.. (YEY).. so for the moment (at christmas) il be running one of the above systems, with a £20 graphcis card

Total price you want to spend and I'll spec ya a PC if ya like ;)

Also, what is it you need? HDD's monitor etc?

And are you likly to O/C?

heyy... i like to do things step by step so i don't show myself the ridiculous ammoutn of money that i spend on pcs... i'm limited to cost, as i'll hopefully be getting these things for christmas... i already have a monitor, case, dvd drive, Enermax Liberty 620W, and OCZ 4GB (2x2GB) PC2-5400C5 Dual Channel.. i'l be getting a £30 hard drive as i dont use up much space.. so the only components i am lookign for are a motherboard and a processor

I will most likely overclock any processor i get , and will have a go at overcloking the ram.. i've managed to extend the "life" of my p4 3.4 ghz processor a bit longer by overclockign it to 3.8, not a huge overclock as it's a prescott, but it make a big difference...

so the budget for a processor and motherbaord is around £170... for that u can get a
Intel Core 2 Duo E6550 , and a Asus P5K Intel P35
and i will add a high end graphcis card in june

Save your cash mate and get a e2140 if your going to Overclock. You will get that to the E6550 speeds easily.

As for mobo... depends again on if you want Crossfire etc. I think every one is saying P35 atm though... Either the Asus you have already seen on the Gigabyte GA-P35C-DS3R, both the same price.

Wooo! E2180+P35C_DS3R+Aftermarket Cooler = Lots of overclocking goodness. It'd walk all over a stock E6550

yes.. but what about FSB speeds, and l2 cache stuff? (i'm rather ignorant about that stuff), and you've gotta remeber that i'm going to be using this system for proper gamign in january...

Well.. ok.. the E2180 does have a quarter the maount of cache of a 6550, but tbh i don't think that makes much difference in hardly anything unless you're really comparing it down to the tiniest details.. and as for fsb speed... an E2180 at 3.5GHz has a FSB of 1400Mhz, faster than any stock E6XXX

Lol yep. It's great, It'd clock to 3.6 and maybe higher if you use a more expensive cooler, but you probably wouldn't see much difference. It'd really would be worth getting one of these and saving the spare money for the new 45nm chips intel are releasing soon.

100% correct. Get a cheap Dual core now and then get a quad next year if the dual isn't quick enough... But I think the E2180 is quick stock... let alone at 3+ghz.... And yes, the FSB will be 1333+mhz. It won;t be running at 800mhz if you OC.
