Hi All

I'm new to the forum, so first of all hello everyone!!

I built a gaming PC around 10 years ago, and have decided to have another go... Bit of a project for me to see if I still have the technical skills (I've moved into IT management from being a technical grunt :))

I will be building from scratch including mouse, monitor etc... Could you give your judgement on the following spec? Would this work?

You could change the 1.5TB drive to 2*1TB, or 2*750TB, would allow you to have a mirror, or simply 2 drives and backup one to the other, or as a third option install windaz etc on one and programs and data on the other....

I dislike 1 big drive just for the potential issues with failure, lack of backup mechanisms and the fact you lose everything if you reinstall.

All else looks v nice.

You would probably be better off with the Asus 4870 X2 if your aircooling as it runs cooler and is quieter.

Id personally go for a Samsung / Benq or Iiyama monitor over HP. The contrast ratios and brightness for a £400 24" is really bad, id expect fairly high end professional 24" for that price.

Looks pretty good from this review. I'm not sure how you compared the contrast and brightness, if its from the raw stats then shame on you :)

A couple of comparable alternatives to the HP are the dell 2408WFP and the NEC 24WMGX3. I have the Dell and am very impressed with it. It looks amazing and is brilliant for games and movies. As for the NEC it seems to be just as good as the dell if not better and costs less, however it has just become end-of-life so it will be difficult to get hold of one i'd imagine.

Went mainly on the quantitive empircal data yes. But I prefer to go with people who focus on products in the area in which im buying. Iiyama for example are well known for high performance monitors which are good for designing / medical purposes etc.

He's welcome to go for HP if it will suit his needs and if it has good reviews he can go for it. Only point I'm trying to make is that my £400 would be spent on a much better product that would give a higher return on my expectations.

Thanks for your replies all... I will look at changing the spec of the monitor and graphics card... There has been one other suggested change on the graphics card - Is the XFX any good though? I've also changed the motherboard to a Gigabyte GA-EX58 Extreme as I've found a walkthrough on the internet that will make it easier to overclock...

Couple of questions - This motherboard has onboard sound (2/4/5.1/7.1 channel). Will I still need a soundcard too?

Also, what about speakers? - I was thinking of the Logitech Z4400 THX ones that are on Overclockers (but cheaper by £100 elsewhere)...

WD green drive will be a nasty, nasty bottleneck in that system if your operating system is on it.

At the least get WD black drives, or far better the green with a ssd for boot.

Right - I think I have the final spec (minus the speakers). I can't really justify spending a couple of hundred quid on a SSD drive - Maybe this can be an upgrade in a few months. I've changed the graphics card after reviewing them to the GTX 295, changed the HDD's to 2 spinpoint 1TB's, the motherboard to the Gigabyte GA-EX58 Extreme and also the case (not sure on this one)...

Any feedback will be most welcome!

The 295 is a ludicrous card. 350 quid for a card that performs the same as two 260gtx at £130ish each, and worse than two 275gtx at £175 each.

Not certain the 650W corsair will cope with sli or the 295.

Samsung f1s are good drives, and you need at least one fan for the TRUE

Don't get the vista ultimate! download the windows 7 RC and save 140quid. If really prefer vista for some reason, get the home prem version and save £50, the ultimate really isnt worth that much, with the money saved, you can get a corsair 128gb SSD or 64gb SSD samsung. Get the 4870x2 instead of the 295!

^By most accounts (every one I've seen at least) windows 7 is rather better than vista. So I'll agree with don't buy vista.
