Had my current self-built pc about 3 years now, so thinking about building myself a new one. As I am a bit behind the times with the latest hardware I need help (please ?)

Currently have :

A8nSLI premium , AMD Athlon 4600+, Nvidia 8800GT, 74gb Raptor, 2 gb of some fancy ram.

Now my XP o/s is probably due a reinstall, so I may upgrade to Win7.

I really need some suggestions for a new board and processor. Should I go 64 bit ?

Budget is fairly flexible although I won't be spending £400 on a processor or anything silly like that, and Im not into overclocking.

My current setup has been faultless and has coped with everything thrown at it including games etc.Perhaps I shouldn't bother !

Any advice gratefully received. My main queries I guess are processor and board.

The most efficient/benficial (not necessarily the cheapest) route to bring it up to scratch would probably to get the basis of an i5 rig, you can easily get a decent i5 CPU, mobo and RAM for sub £300 last time I checked. That will definately keep the system going and when the time does eventually come for an upgrade for gaming, it should only be the graphics card to change as the CPU will handle well for the foreseeable future. :D

If he's gaming i5, but if not we can spend the cash not spent on an expensive GPU on an i7 setup which will be far more beneficial for rendering, cad etc,,,

Machine mainly used for general stuff and some gaming. Certainly don't do any cad or video editing.

Already have monitor, speakers etc, a quality psu and case etc etc.

Literally just looking to upgrade the processor and board at the present time.

Yes was aware would need some new ram.

So looks like i5 is the choice, but only one processor available at the moment ?

Asus P7p55d looks like a good board, with a simple overclock which could be good.

Am I goingin the right direction ?

For some reason an i7 920 is appealing to me. The OEM is only £50 more, would buy my own cooler anyway. Would obviously need some more ram with this.

Anyone know how this compares to the i5 in the real world ?

I'm biased in so much as being a i7 920 user I have no complaints.

To be honest though read the various reviews around on the net and consider what YOU are going to use the computer for most!! General use or Gaming ?

When I was researching I got the impression that the i5 is more of a number cruncher and in some respects superior to the i7. The i5 seems to be less well advertised or pushed sales wise than it's big brother but seems to be a vary capable CPU nonetheless.

I have a similar rig to you atm, and I'm thinking something like:

Asus P6TD Deluxe
Intel i7 920 D0
300GB Raptor
6GB Corsair Dominator DDR2 Triple Channel

The video card is the hard part, seems to be stock issues at the moment. All that's readily available is the 5770 - but I'm a bit of an nvidia fanboy so I dunno.

All in all, my current pc still does all the stuff I need it to, so I'm hanging on for now. I'm still using XP Pro, but I have a copy of Seven which I got cheap preorder.
