Finally ordered the last bits of my first computer build. Here is what I have:

- Asus P6T
- Intel Core i7 920 Retail
- Nvidia 8800GTX
- 6gb Corsair XMS3 1600mhz
- Corsair HX 750w
- Samsung 1TB F3 Spinpoint
- Windows 7 Professional Student
- Coolermaster HAF 922

I have changed the odd HDD in the past and am quite confident on working with computers, but I do have a few questions:

1. The gfx card I have I was given from a friend and am not sure if it works or not. Is there any way of testing it before I put it in my computer, and if it does not work will it break anything?

2. Does anyone have any tips regarding my specific hardware/software?

Cheers! ;)

8800 GTX?!

Why?!

That's so old tech compared to the rest of your system. At least get a GTX 260/280 to stick in it.

That will MAYBE bottleneck your system.

you're better off with a 5770 than a 8800gtx.

You could user the 8800 as a physx card or as a secondary house heater.

He said he got the card from a friend.

The 8800GTX is going to be a bottleneck, but it depends if you are a gamer or not if this will really bother you that much. With 6GB of RAM just make sure you install 64bit windows otherwise it is pointless.

It is unlikely to damage your pc, you just wont get video if it is b0rked.

Thanks. Yeah I forgot to mention in the original post that it was x64 windows. Not going to be using it for any heavy gaming just Photoshop and such like. If I ever manage to get a job  then I shall definitely upgrade the video card. :)
