Hey guys,

So the family computer needs upgrading. Its a Dell Dimension 9200. As far I can see the best thing to do is build a new one and I was wondering what you guys would recommend for parts?

It is used for general use and I can salvage a few things off of the Dimension, such as:

GPU: 256MB ATI Radeon X1300 Pro.
HDD: 250GB 7200rpm SATA.
And the optical drives.

Not sure whether or not I can salvage the PSU or even the case? Case doesn't really matter I guess as they are cheap anyway. But what other parts would you guys suggest?

Looking to spend around £200 which I think should be realistic if we are looking at CPU, Mobo and RAM.

Cheers!

I would reuse the hard drive and optical drive then build a system around the AMD llano APU. This processor would be ideal for a family computer because of its high graphical performance as well as being pretty decent in everyday tasks. It's also pretty value orientated.

As for the RAM I would recommend 4GB Corsair 1600MHz (mostly because it's only £22 or so). Should be plenty to handle everyday tasks+ run all the other stuff others may leave on:P

Motherboard I wouldn't really know. But I would recommend a Asus or maybe Gigabyte if they have any in that price range.

As for the PSU I think your better off buying a new one. I recommend OCZ as they are very good value but offer outstanding performance. You will only need like a 400-500W one for this low powered system. The case I would keep, but if you can afford another one for £20-£30 it might be worth it.

That case is a steal at £40 if you do want one. Has 4 120mm fans, fan controller and digital temp display alongside cable management. If you drop the case i'm sure you could squeeze in an i3 CPU which would be better. Beej forgot about your free delivery ;)

Silly me

That case is a great price for what it is!

Thanks everybody for all of the responses. The DVD drive is SATA.

The current spec that you guys have come up with looks pretty decent. In terms of the case is there anything a bit cheaper? Being the family computer the case isn't really a priority! Even though I realise the fans, controller and cable management are worth it.

Just an idea because as you said it might be worth getting an i3 instead? Again it probably isn't worth it though as the computer really is only used for general things, web browsing etc.

Cheers :)

The BitFenix Merc is also good for the price if you wanna save a tenner:

840 vs i3 2100
Not worth it for this use IMO :)

Thanks for the response again.

I suppose its not really worth it, considering the current CPU is an Intel Pentium D 945 3.4Ghz. I think the difference will already be huge and the difference between those two isn't that much!

Plus the RAM is 2GB DDR2 533MHz. So the increase in speed will certainly be noticeable overall!

Cheers :)

Yeah will be quite an improvement!

Happy to help :)

Just had another idea! I could always stick my newish motherboard in it. It's a MSI P67A-GD65.

Then buy a new IvyBridge compatible one for me :D

Just a possible idea! Thoughts?

Cheers :)

Hey Ollie its been a while!

Thanks for the response, so the current CPU in the spec list would not actually work with the GD65?

Guess that I would have to forget that, not that it matters really! Just out of curiosity why would it need a reinstall?

Cheers :)

Well those CPUs aren't on the support list, which is strange, as they should/could work in theory - best to play it safe though if it doesn't list them (a later BIOS version might?).

I think with the reinstall he meant if you buy a new motherboard (e.g. a Z77) you'll need to reinstall Windows. I recently went from P67 to Z77 and had to reinstall (I did try with the old install, more out of curiosity!).
