New PC build for a friend of mine.

He has been running with an i3 and 1070 and its time for an upgrade.

The PC is only for gaming and Plays games at 1440p

Budget is £2000 no windows is required. Doesn't not mind a prebuild or self build.

Thanks in advance

Is there any particular game or genre he favours, or is it quite general? Some titles favour certain parts more than others in terms of CPU and GPU selections.

What monitor does he have exactly? Knowing whether it has g-sync/v-sync and the refresh rate he'll be aiming for would be helpful too.

Here's an idea:

My basket at OcUK:

Total: £1,046.78 (includes delivery: £11.98)

Blinged it up a little bit, you could save here and there if RGB isn't your cup of tea.

M-ATX as that's my personal preference.

The price of the 9800X3D is ridiculous, but he has a healthy budget so I included it. You could drop down to a 9600 or 7600 and save a couple of hundred quid, on average there's only roughly 5% performance difference between those two chips, but the odd game such as Assetto Corsa will see around 20-30% depending.

That leaves around £1000-1200 for a GPU, unfortunately they're like hens teeth at the moment. On the Nvidia side you could try your luck getting a 5080 or 5070ti, but the ones which are available are painfully over priced and I'd not recommend spending much over their MSRP, alternatively AMD has new cards launching in a couple of weeks and you could try your luck with those, fingers crossed the pricing and availability is better.

Thanks for the reply. He plays all sorts but wants something that will play star citizen as he's interested in it.

Not sure on the monitor, I have told him to get an OLED at the same time but not sure he'll swing that with his wife

There were actually some decent 34" Ultrawide OLED's not so long back for around £500, if he cut back on the CPU and went for a 7600/9600 instead it might be doable for around the £2000 mark all in.

The MSRP for the upcoming 9070 and 9070XT really isn't bad at all, it's just being lucky enough to get one really.
