Hi Everyone,
Firstly I would like to say thanks to the people who helped me a week or so ago spec'ing a work machine. Its fantastic, so thank you.

Now on to the matter at hand. My dad has had a Dell XPS for the last 10 years but its now struggling to play the games he likes (black ops for example). So I have decided to get him one for Christmas.

What I would like is a machine that will last for a while, and won't cause him any drama. I am happy to build or buy pre-built. I am also happy to do some light overclocking for him.

The machines primary purpose will be Gaming as he has a laptop for internets and work. He games on a 20" screen, so I guess 1280x800 or something like that.

I have no real attachment to AMD or Intel.

For budget, I would like to spend around £750.

Sorry for the essay but I really want to get this right. Thank you in advance for your time.

Rick

Thank you very much, Only change I think I would make would be to use the Antec 300 case. as I have built 4 machines with that case recently.

Other than that it looks pretty tasty. Thanks.

came up with something for amd, leaves change to swap to the antec 300 if you really want too, didn't realise the price had gone up so much for them :

Sorry to bring back the thread but....

i wanted to say, thanks mp260767 for taking the time to spec that, i didn't see your reply before it dropped of the front page :)

The only question I have is, is it going to be worth waiting for "Sandy Bridge"? or is that likely to be out of my price range. I don't really like the idea of giving him and IOU on Christmas day but if the performance boost is worth it?

Thanks again for the great specs, very tempted to give the old man some AMD tech

You would show it to him and he'd be like "What? That's my old computer!", until you open it up! You could pimp out the insides with CCFL tubes etc, then put it under the Christmas tree all lit up!

That would be epic, but he's not really into the building side of things, so I would just be sat in the study on my own building a computer... not how I want to spend Christmas really.

Going to order it now, still massively torn between AMD and Intel though.

Might be a bit iffy building a computer on Xmas eve just in case something is dead on arrival which needs to be RMA'd and stops the system from functioning. Chances are slim, but I just know from my own luck I would get a duff part if I was building it the day before Xmas. :p

PS it's cool that your old man likes to game! :D

Hey, that's not so unusual, my sons dad also builds his own PC's. :D Apart from the RMA issue it would be good to get more people involved in building the PC, I'm sure OC will be open on Boxing day to help out LoL!

Andi.

Yeah its pretty cool, He loves pwning me and my older brother on COD. Its a good way to keep in touch when we all moved away.

I have order and Intel spec slightly modified from RJC's spec. Just need to find a lovely copy of windows somewhere.

I totally failed on budget, I always see stuff for £10 more etc, so ended up with £810
