New PC for gaming?

Guys, a little help, I am currently looking to update my very old PC, which at present is only used for Lightroom and CS5. However the kids are slowly taking over my PS3 and I was wondering would a new PC be as good as the PS3 for games? If so what spec would I need to improve on the PS3 and also improve my editing times for photos?

All help would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Gary

PC graphics will blow a PS3 away

PS3 can only ran 95% of it games at 720p (1280x720) or less

A very low spec :D

Before anyone can spec you a PC system they will need to know your price range and what hardware you already own if any..

Instead of the antec case above id go for the coolermaster thats on offer today. Also get 8gb of ram as that will benefit cs5

The equipment I have at present is an advent 4003 from pc world. It has an amd processor 2.2ghz, I changed the graphics card to a gainward gtx460 and had to change the power supply too. that is a coolermaster gx650. I also have a dell U2311 monitor. Like everybody, I would prefer to spend as little as possible, but I am aware that if I need something that is going to last me a few years then, I am going to have to get my hand in my pocket.

Hope this helps..

In that case, use the 460 in your new one along with the psu. I specced you a sound card -do you really need one? Is there anything else you can transfer?

I don't think there is anything else inside it that's worth using, on the sound card front you will have to excuse my ignorance, but, I thought they were already on the motherboard. If they are not then I'm going to need one.

Cheers

I would prefer not to go over £800, but one final question re my gtx 460, it is only a slow one as it was used for lightroom and cs5. It has 768MB, and a memory clock of 1800, is this going to be good enough for gaming?

Thanks

It will be OK. What resolution is your monitor? I haven't look it up.

I would advise trying it out on a few games that you like and if the FPS are high enough for you then change it also. I would suggest an ATi 6950 at the moment.

If you can spend more then I would upgrade the case from above to something like:

mmmmm WHITE...

or

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-102-AN&groupid=701&catid=7&subcat=160

Both will have more room which is nice is want to keep this spec for as long as possible. This is my only regret not getting a full tower. The time will come.

Possibly increase the SSD size to:

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HD-060-OC&groupid=701&catid=14&subcat=1427

Regarding the 460 768mb have a look at this:

http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/315?vs=293

This is comparing the 460 768mb with the 6950 2GB which atm is what I would get at £239. (prices will come down though but you can flash these atm to a 6970 which is nice) so it depends if that FPS difference is worth the £230 odd in the games that you play.

GZA

EDIT: at 1920 x 1080 I would say try it out and decide then. Benchmarks aren't worth the screens they're displayed on compared to just trying out games yourself imo. Play some games if the 460 768mb struggles - sell it and get a new card.
