Spec me a new desktop PC for my mother superior, who just uses the thing for emailing / word / and maybe viewing the odd picture of a church or something equally riveting.

I've searched on these here forums and come across the Asus EEE box, but one thing I know she wants is a floppy drive, and a DVD drive. I've seen a external USB DVD drive, but a floppy?

Help me out here. Budget is whatever it needs to be, but I said it would probably be about £300

She's got a monitor already (VGA) so is happy to keep using that.

Are you wanting a pre build system? If not, just spec the cheapest dual core components you can come up with, including a mobo with onboard graphics, pretty simple :)

To be honest I can't be arzed with the whole building up the PC lark. I just want to buy her one, open the packaging, plug it in and speed away in a cloud of tyre smoke. Hence the EEE box or something similar. She was using an old shuttle SFF system I built her ages ago, so really she would like something nice and compact to replace it.

Heard very mixed reviews on the eee box think a shuttle build would be much better

shuttle

cpu

ram

dvdr

hdd

Overkill ofc but its better to overspec than underspec :P

Could save £50 by going for the AMD version

Thanks for the post. Seems like the best solution!! Do I need some kind of cooler with that badboy? What hard drive would you recommend. Anything else I need.......I've just added the component you linked into my basket, so are you sure they will all be compatible?

Nice one

Just go for the cheapest Dell box you can find, it'll more than meet her needs whilst being very cheap. Its unlikely you'd be able to build something for much cheaper if you have to pay for an OS.

I've seen a external USB DVD drive, but a floppy?
Should be available at other e-tailers especially that famous auction site BUT you should convince her to move to Flashdisks. I get a headache just remembering the problems floppies used to give me even up until sometime early this year.

Thinking about it, she doesnt need a floppy or a DVD drive. I've told her to bring all the floppies here and put them or her USB stick she has. So I guess the EEE box might be ok after all?????
