Hey all. Planning on getting a new PC for my son for xmas, he plays lots of games and current PC is struggling at 1440p.

At the moment he's got some crappy pre built thing from Curry's with a Intel CPU and a 3060TI that sounds like a jet engine, 16gb ram and a terrible case.

Id like to keep the price around 1300quid if we can but dont mind going over if needs be.....

Now i spent 1700quid on my PC built in March and got a 9800X3d and a 9070XT etc etc. I was planning on a 7800x3d and a 9070XT pulse, is it worth stretching to a 5070Ti? Motherboard and PSU options?

I will sell the old PC so that will go towards it.

Thanks.

9070xt to a 5070ti. personally, nope, wouldn't spend extra. the 9070xt is more than capable for 4k, let alone 1440p

I would recommend against the Corsair RMe series, the company changed OEM roughly a year ago and there's been a decline in quality since coupled with numerous reported failures on this forum and others.

Not sure why you included the F12?

Otherwise a pretty solid recommendation for a midi-build vs the earlier M-ATX.

For gaming I'd take the 7600X3D but if saving some cash the 9600X can be a healthy option, it's actually 20-30% quicker than the 7600 in one or two instances such as Asseto Corsa despite being on average around 5-10%.

I have a 9070XT........... was asking if its worth spending extra on a 5070Ti instead of a 9070XT for sons build.......

Thank you for the suggestions. Im thinking the 7600X3D and a 9070XT. Whats the XFX triple fan 9070XT like for noise levels? Im tempted just to get the Pulse like ive got because its pretty good on the noise front.

PSU- 750W is enough?

Performance, no. Unless your son has something he specifically needs from the nvidia software ecosystem, then no.

Pulse is a safe choice. I've got one too

Yes. But if you have the budget or there is a more than reasonable chance of upgrading to a beefier card then get a 850w instead

At one point, the 9070 XT was getting very pricey, like £650+ even for basic models, but now that the Pulse is £570 the 5070 Ti is a much harder sell. There's a value in having something different though, e.g. if you have a game that doesn't like one card for some reason, or a set of dodgy drivers.

I was waiting till black friday to order everything but now iam just thinking order it all now. I have ordered the memory already.

Do we think OCUK is going to have any more of a sale when proper black friday comes? i can't imagine much will change....

Im on the same agenda - I'll post here the query here but delete or start a new thread as it will be identicle.
Lads birthday early december.
I did have a x299a i7 7820x cpu with a 1080ti card in it - was perfectly fine for him, a little laggy however it gave up the ghost, only red led on motherboard and attempted a new PSU same thing.

Im just biting the bullet.

He has an xbox - its **** he says, laggy, no in game voice - I dont know much about gaming rigs and gaming (I'm still only play counterstrike on a private server with mates from years gone by more social).
He's only 13 and to be honest I dont want to spoil him on this - but he needs something better than his xbox (whatever the latest version is purchased last year!).

He plays the usual suspects fortnite (lmiited), roblex and mods along with steam games like scootx.

Spec he's after (demanding haha) and my budget for this £800:

5060ti 16gb ram
16gb system ram min 32 if within budget
white case
non water cooling
motherboard
cpu I am lost on these nowadays.

I have win11 pro non oem licenses, hard drive (nvme samsung990pro 2TB and some larger data drives).

Is this doable?
Any advice much welcome?

Thanks

Doable, but tricky, easier with the 9060 XT.

Ryzen 7400/8400F (do check, but I think both have coolers in the box): £130
A620/B650M (with USB flashback) or B850M: ~£90
32GB DDR5 RAM, e.g. Crucial kit at OCUK: £130
Graphics (Zotac 5060 Ti 16GB): £380
Case (e.g. Phanteks XT M3): £50
PSU (MSI A650BN): £50

If he's on an xbox series x, then to say it's baggy with fortnite and no ingame voice, then there's something wrong with the xbox.
My son was an fortnite fiend, and he switched back from pc back to xsx as it ran better than the pc with s 3080fe in it. And in game voice works fine...I work abroad so have 1 night a week I play xsx with my youngest...I'm 7000km away from him and voice works perfectly at that distance.
My oldest at uni now and he took his xsx with him as smaller than his pc(and more portable...and tbf, less costly to replace if gets knocked. Anyway, he up in Liverpool and still plays with his school buddies back home , and at other uni's.
Not saying don't build a pc for your son, but just saying you should check xbox working correctly.
Also side note, a lot of sons friends still on xsx, so another reason he took it...social aspect..he speaks to his mates on it all the time

Side note, you'll need 32gb ram for fortnite...it uses more than 16gb, or does with us...and ram prices have roofed. Literally build a pc for a friend just prior to gave term and 32gb 6000c30 cost me £100...just been asked to build another one...£180 upwards now seems to be the going rate and generally 6000c36
So the crucia pro ocl 6000c36 kit @Tetras mentioned for £129.99 is a bargain, in today's mkt...i see 2 kis sold already today...i would just buy that now anyway before it sells out. Way cheaper than anything here

that's now £149.99...didn't last long at 129.99

I'm cutting my losses. Get him a new rig.Budget around 1200 give or take 150 or so 1400 absolute max.
Like to get something like amd 7900x and msi z890s-s Mobo
5060ti or 5070 16gb gpus no sure which
32gb 6000mhz ram recommendations please nothing extreme. Rgb would be OK depending on cost variations.
I've got the the Samsung990pro nvme 2tb that works and win 11pro license non oem so can move that across.
Do the 9700x come with stock coolers or have to/best get one separate ie bequiet dark rock 5?

Any case recommendations please with side glass panel.
PSU considering corsair 650w or too low?
Anything I missed

Oh yes white leds... WTH lol if I got him the base unit with a 5060 and white less he'd be happy... But dad's a cheeky gamer
Thanks

Oh follow up would there be any viability in installing the old 1080ti nvidia card on an 9950x3d cpu?
Juggling parts around.

well, you wont be gpu throttled, that's for sure...your cpu will probably running at nothing % though...if this is for gaming then the 9800x3d is your man ..the 9950x3d is 16 cores rather than 8, but 8 are normal, and the other 8 are x3d...while gaming it basically just turns the 8 non x3d cores off, and runs on the 8 with the x3d...effectively just becomeing a 9800x3d...so unless you need 16 cores for heavy workload, it's just extra expense for no real benefit...I'd even say the 7800x3d for mid range cards if significantly cheaper is probably a better shout, if it allows you to get a better gpu with the money saved...if doing some productivity, the 9800x3d is better though, purely as the x3d layer is below the main cores and insulated, the the cores can run at higher clocks and be cooled better...the 7800x3d cpu had the x3d (l3 cache layer), on the top of the die, so the cpu core were clocked lower as a result...does make the 7800x3d a more efficient cpu though, which draws a lot less power...having both, unless you're gaming at 1080p with a powerful gpu, don't think you'll notice the difference

If he is only gaming then the 7900X isn't worth it. I'd get a 7700/7700X or 9700X. The 6x6 config is fine for productivity, but these CPUs aren't ideal for gaming, better off with an 8-core.

A Z890 board is not compatible with AMD, these are for Intel Core Ultra CPUs. The AMD equivalent is X870/X870E, but there's not much point buying one of those unless you need the features. B850, or even B650 if the deal is great, is fine.

5060ti or 5070 16gb gpus no sure which
The 5070 is 12GB.

At OCUK right now, you can buy a 9060 XT 16GB for £300, whereas the nearest 5060 Ti 16GB is £380, the 9060 XT easily wins that battle. There's also a 9070 (with 16GB of VRAM) at £460.

Do the 9700x come with stock coolers or have to/best get one separate ie bequiet dark rock 5?
For AM5 (7000/9000), no X CPU has a stock cooler, only non-X.

If you already have a good tower air cooler then no harm in re-use, but the peerless assassin / phantom spirit are cheaper than most alternatives and just as good.

PSU considering corsair 650w or too low?
Enough for a 5060 Ti 16GB or 5070, but I would personally stick with 750 or 850 for a new system, just to give you a little more headroom and future utility. 650 is on the line of what you'd need for a bigger upgrade, whereas 750 or 850 should handle pretty much anything.

ATX?

These cases all have support for long graphics cards and they come with enough fans for almost any PC.

My choice would be Lian Li's 216.

My basket at OcUK:

Total: £412.81 (includes delivery: £27.99)

Oh follow up would there be any viability in installing the old 1080ti nvidia card on an 9950x3d cpu?
It should work, but not a well balanced pairing.
