Hi,

One of my PCs went off to the retailer for repair, and got mangled by Parcelforce. I'm looking for £500 compensation, and am inclined to use this to build my own PC. Salvaged from the battered one, and from other PCs of the past, I have the following.

PSU - Extreme Power Plus - 460w
Nvidia GeForce GTX 260 (large!)
4 X 2GB dd2 Kingston memory sticks
HDs various, including the one they didn't manage to damage, the OS drive, which has Vista Ultimate 64 bit on it.
Usual peripherals such as mouse/keyboard/flat screen/external 24 bit soundcard,

Seems to me I need

Case
Mobo
CPU
DVD RW drive

What I'd like to do is spec up the best I can get - preferably quad core CPU, for example, that I can build the above into it.

Any suggestions would be hugely appreciated; meanwhile I shall go and stroll around the various forums

Cheers

Hi,

If you wish to use the GTX 260 graphics card, I would recommend a new PSU, perhaps the Corsair TX 550, the 460 watt PSU may not cut it with a power hungry card alongside a quad core CPU.

Case=Antec 300 £44.99
Motherboard=Asus PSQ series-the PSQ-E is a great board £105.00
CPU= Intel Quad Q9450 £148.99
DVD-RW=Pioneer Sata DVD-RW drive £17.99

The above CPU is OEM so you may need a CPU cooler, a great cheap but quiet cooler is the Artic Cooling 7 Pro for LGA 775 for £17.99.

Hope this helps.

Total (not including PSU) is £334.96

I wouldn't use that PSU, i've never even heard of the brand and it's more than likely to blow it up.

I went for that CPU and motherboard because you have DDR2. Although there are AM3 boards that support it, it seemed a bit pointless. DVD Drive supports lightscribe, which can be useful and funky. There are plenty of cases to choose from, it's up to you really.

How does this look, put a new psu on as well:

Folks,

That's fantastic! Many thanks, I will settle down and peruse the various specs. First, of course, I have to get the comp from Parcelforce, and I am sure that will take some time. This is just what I was looking for.

Cheers
Jeremy

I have the older PC-7 with a 4850 in, this is 24cm from the face of the inside PCI slot to near the hd.

The 260 is simular size so you should be fine :)

the OS drive, which has Vista Ultimate 64 bit on it.

Unless you buy the same motherboard it wont work :( if its oem you can ask microsoft very nicly to unlock it not sure myself how but heard about it being done in cases of provable motherboard damage / replacement.

If they wont just get windows 7 RC & preorder windows 7
