My current PC died the other day and I need to replace it. I am going to be buying a new rig at the end of this month. My current PC is a Athon 64+ 3500 with 2 gig of ram and a Radeon 4850. I have held back on buying a new PC for a while now down to lack of funds.

I have the go ahead from Mrs Spubbynight to buy at the end of the month when I am paid. Looking to spend £1000 or so.

I have been looking at the prebuilt systems here and I have seen some great value. I don't need an O/S as I have a spare Vista Business licence (which I think I can pickup 64bit media for)

I don't want to build myself and I have been there, done that, and for once I want a rig that comes prebuilt.

I am currently looking at a Core i7 rig preoverclocked. I did think of of going with a Phenom II but all the rigs here are configured with DDR3 and that puts them pretty close to i7 territory price wise.

My buying quandries are thus :

Core i7 w/DDR3 v Phenom II w/DDR3

Which do I go for? The benefit that I am thinking is that the AM3 socket is likely to last longer than the 1366 which I understand is going to be replaced with Lynnfield. I can't hold out so which way do I swing?

I have a 4850 card already. Do I keep this buy another card and run it in crossfire or get an Nvidia card (thinking a 260?)

The main use for my rig will be gaming but I don't want to have to tinker for a while.

Thoughts much appreciated.

heres a spec ive left the case out

it has dual gfx cards just to make sure u wont have to upgrade for a while lets say 4years::D

anyways overclocking is a joy so you can do it yourself:D

I would go Core i7 personally but I have read that the Phenoms hold their own in gaming.

Do you need a monitor? Do you need any peripherals? or s the £1000 exclusively for the tower?

All you have to do is stick everything in the case. The overclocking has been done, just plug and play. It's almost pre-built.

I have keyboard, mouse etc. I also have a 19" TFT but I am tempted by the Benq 24" 1920x1080 panel for £150 or so.

What do people think about graphics - run 2 4850s in crossfire?

I was thinking of moving over to Nvidia for CUDA support.

Looking at the Titan Goliath which looks like a steal at the price.

depends on the memory of the 4850s tbh, if they're 1 gig ones i'd imagine they'd outperform the 4890. (don't quote me on this)

2x512 however might not be a sensible decision at that res as it only uses 512 of memory and the other 512 is mirrored. However this may not be enough for future games, you can probably get away with it now but a few months down the line who knows. At a slightly lower res i'd imagine they'd wipe the floor with most things.

personally if i was you i'd go 4890 as it's a steal at the moment, nvidia are just as good but their equivalent to the 4890 is the gtx 275 which is considerably more expensive. May i ask do you need your video card for anything other than gaming? reason i ask is some applications like nvidia and will allow them to work faster. however if its just for gaming i'd have to say 4890.

spud has been a member for 3 years but only has 6posts :(

anyways it all depends on your budget spud:D

have you taken a look at the specs above buddy?

I have looked at the specs above and they seem nearly identical to the prebuilt Titan Goliath.

I am veering towards that (as long as the price is good in 2 weeks) with a 4890.

Sorry for not posting more in the last 3 years.
