New pc is here and built, quick question...

After my thread the other day I went and purchased the following system yesterday:

Asus P5N32-SLI Premium WiFi
Intel E6600 C2D 2.4ghz
2gig Corsair DDR2 667
Asus 7600GS 512mb Silent
Maxtor 320gb SATA2 16mb

I'm very happy with the system however I have noticed its not as fast as my friends which is identical with the exception that he has an Asus P5B Deluxe motherboard - which I wanted to get but they were out of stock for a week so went for the one above (which I was told is the same except it has the SLI feature for dual gfx cards).

Don't get me wrong the difference in speed isn't massive, however its there. For example when I view one of my raw images in Nikon View, if I zoom to %100 there is a little bar down the bottom right that is telling you the progress of it adding the noise information etc before the image gains full detail at %100.

On my friend machine this progress bar has been and gone before you have finished the 4 clicks you need to get to %100 viewing. Whereas on mine you have to wait about a second or slightly more after you get to %100 viewing size for the bar to go. Also his raw files are larger than mine as well!!

So I know its not a huge difference but there clearly is one. I'm just wondering if the motherboard could make that much difference or if I may have to do something to mine to get it running at optimum speed.

Both systems are new builds from within the last week.

Any advice appreciated :)
 
Absolutely identical in every minute detail, apart from the mbd? I'm no expert on this, but I guess it's possible, but I'd say any two identical systems are unlikely to produce identical results. If your hard drive has more on it than his that could make a difference.

You could always just OC a bit and you'd likely surpass his performance.

Hmmm ok, I suspected there could be differences from one system to another I just didn't think it could be quite as obvious! Oh well :(

I have no idea about OC, how its done, how much is safe with the standard fans etc?!? Its all gibberish to me! lol
 
Thanks for the tips, the whole system was built from new yesterday with everything formatted etc and there is only about 25gig of the 320 being used at the mo.

HD is set correctly too. Guess I'll just leave it be for now - although I'll do some reading up on this overclocking business :)

Good call - overclocking is a free performance upgrade ;)
 
I've just sorted my slower photoshop loading of raw images. I deleted the Nikon plugin that overrides the photoshop one and now its much better. Still a bit slower with the %100 viewing though in Nikon View but I can live with that for now.

Just been trying to get my head round all this OC business, think I might leave it until I can find someone who knows what they are doing to help me! lol
 
I'll be honest, I;ve got no idea how I would do that! I don't know a thing about the back end of pc's. PC's are like cars to me, they jsut work and when they dont I hand them over to someone else to make it work again. I'd like to learn more though, just a fair bit to take in at once!!
 
normally there is a small plastic jumper on the back and depending what two pins its on desides if its sata 1 or sata2. normally if you get a sata hdd they should be on correct one. but anythngs possible :)

i will have a look when i go attatching my old ide drive to get some info off it, if i remember rightly i dont think i noticed any jumpers on the pins though
