New pc isnt working!

Well i have just received my Phenom II 720 and it seems the last user went OTT with the thermal paste as it is all over the cpu and around the edges.....Whats recommended to use to clean it? preferably free :p

Ok ive got some toilet paper lol so just wipe over it? and then just round the edges were the thermal paste has gone?
Would i be able to use cotton buds? would make it easier to get round the edges etc?

Yes, cotton buds will also work - but again if you can dip them in a bit of lemon juice (you need the citric acid) then your job will be 10 times easier.

Just be 100% certain you don't get any of the liquid or paste on the conductive pads on the bottom of the CPU - or you will be in big trouble.

Well i have used a cotton bud and just wiped around the cpu and on top....I didnt use any lemon juice :/ but it came off quite easily anyways.
And yeh i was worried about that so i grabbed the little bit of foam that came on another cpu and just stuck the cpu on it so it should be all ok :)....Can i use a small needle (sewing) to just pick out the little bits under the lip of the cpu?

You should be fine, just make sure you ground it first and are very careful. If I was you, I would use something no-conductive like a toothpick.

Ok well i have done it know and didnt touch the actual cpu itself i dont think just the hard thermal paste.....I just have to wait for my new motherboard now :(...I am tempted to take the Phenom II 545 out of my current mobo and try it but i dont have any thermal paste to use when installing the Phenom II 545 back into it when i get my new one...Unless of course i dont bother :p

Guys will this be ok.....
Putting my Phenom 545 and cooler from my asus mobo on to my gigabyte motherboard without replacing the thermal paste? I ask because i want to try and unlock it but dont really want to wait for/buy some thermal paste.

Ideally you need to install fresh thermal paste when moving or re-installing the cpu to avoid high temps.

You can try but keep a close eye on temps.

As RJC says, you can run IBT - just have a program that monitors the CPU temperatures (realtemp is good) running alongside. If you see the temps go too high, turn off IBT immediately.

This is probably covered in the unlocking guides, but I'll repeat - if you do unlock another core you are very likely to need to add additional core voltage to keep the CPU stable. If you are using a Phenom II X2 stock cooler, you may not be able to keep it cool enough under full load.

quite an ... interesting thread :p

the stock cooler will be just about able to keep an unlocked quad core phenom within reasonable temps. Just forget about extra voltage. The slightest increase and the temps will soar.

Ok guys well ive decided not to try unlocking as i dont have any confidence with the voltages etc.
Instead im just going to take my 545 out of asus mobo and replace with 720, Do i need to do anything eg BIOS or do i just stick in and stick a cooler on?
