Hi Guys, (copied post from CPU's just to get alternatuve perspective, hope this isn't frowned upon)

Within the next month i wish to get a new rig, for gaming and some video transcoding etc, also want it to last a while (last MOBO/PRO/RAM been ~5 years - with regular GPU upgrades).

Was looking at the New X79 mobos, from ASUS and the SB-E 3930, like the sound of quad channel ram. also getting a 240GB SSD ~£1500 budget (dont need PSU/GPU).

is the 2011 socket here to stay? i have no idea why there was the 1155,1156,1356 (or whatever), is this another stopgap?

ive been reading some bad views about the SB-E, compared to the 2600k etc, and the IB/IB-E is the thing that people really want? when is that out? IS it worth the wait?

What do you guys think of the spec? any comments/suggestions?

This is proposed spec:
Intel Core i7-3930K 3.20GHz (Sandybridge-E) Socket LGA2011 Processor - Retail
Kingston HyperX 240GB 2.5" SATA-3 Solid State Drive
Asus P9X79 DELUXE Intel X79 (Socket 2011) DDR3 Motherboard
G.Skill RipJawsZ 16GB (4x4GB) DDR3 PC3-17000C9 2133MHz Dual/Quad Channel Kit
Corsair Hydro H100 Extreme Performance Liquid CPU Cooler
Antec P280 Super Midi Tower Case - Gun Metal Black

Socket 1155 is here to stay. The new 2011 socket (Sandy Bridge E socket) is the new enthusiast workstation etc platform designed to replace 1366.

Next year, both platforms will see new processors based on 22nm (Ivy Bridge) but the socket will remain the same, except for added pci-e 3.0 support.

For desktop use (Gaming etc) the 1155 platform is more than adequate, and in some cases performed better than SB-E. For your uses, you would be better off with the 2500k or the 2600k.

However, it may be worth waiting on Ivy Bridge which is just around the corner.
