So I am starting to think about a new pc/upgrade options and wondering if I will get much more than what I currently have and if it is worth while. I don't really follow all the tech religiously until I decide I want an upgrade.

My current PC specs are
i7 950 @ 3.8
Gigabyte X58-UD3R
6 GB Ram
Samsung 830 256gb SSD
GTX 570
Asus Xonar DX
1x 1tb drive and 2x2tb drives
Silverstone FT02B case
2 x 24" monitors (A dell U2412M and a Benq 2420HDBL)

A new pc I wouldn't need monitors, sound card, SSD, a mouse, I have kb but maybe a mech keyboard and my case is more than good enough to keep. Basically looking at CPU/Ram/Mobo/Graphics card upgrade options. Haswell is due this year isn't it, would that be worth waiting for? Graphics card I am thinking probably a 670? Mobo no idea and ram well is that still cheap? Would be willing to overclock it a bit so not a stock cooler either.

My usual budget is some where between £7-900 but I already have a few bits I wouldn't need to buy again. Not sure how much I would get for my current CPU/H50/GFX/Mobo/Ram so that would recoup me some money at least.

Thanks people.

Do you only game?

You 570 should still hold it's own against a 670. There are obviously going to be some differences, but tis up to you. Bench for 570 vs 670 HERE.

Haswell is due out in July, depends if you think Ivy is still worth the investment or not, but I've done a quick spec anyway.

Yeah pretty much what I use it for, bit of work which is just word and learning a bit of programming nothing that is very intensive. The 570 still seems to do okay looking at those bench marks which is pretty sweet.

One of my reasons for wanting an upgrade is this mobo doesn't support the full speeds of my SSD which feels like a bit of a waste of it really.

Thanks for the spec, I get the itch and want an upgrade but it seems the gap isn't quite as big as it usually is when I do?

The first generation i7 processors have aged very well and the gaps from Nehalem -> SB -> IB haven't been huge. For gaming and general purpose I can see the first i7 chips easily being fine for another couple of years at least (particularly when overclocked to 3.6 GHz+). The main advantages with upgrading to newer Intel chips will be power savings and a few new motherboard features.

You could save some money with the g/card and run SLI with this board, saving yourself the cost of a 670. You could prob get a 2nd-hand/ b-grade 570 for less than £200. I know the price still seams high, but you'll get better performance from 570 SLi than a single 670. There is always ATI by the way.

A quick glance at the members market suggests 2nd hand GTX 580s can be picked up for £160 so I'd expect more like £140 for a 570 these days.

Not sure my PSU would support another card it is a 550w Corsair HX I believe. What would be minimum needed for that?
