Hi, ive just built a new pc for a friend, its been running fine past 2 days while installing windows and drivers etc.
today its playing silly buggers!
powers up and off again before bios screen, i have tried clearing cmos which worked but i also took out all the ram and left stick 1 in bank 1.

i have just tried several memory configurations i.e stick 1 bank 1 stick 1 bank 2 etc stick 2 bank 1 stick 2 bank 2 so on and so forth.

would this be a memory problem or motherboard or both?

pc is 3 days old
board: gigabyte z86x ud4
memory: corsair vengance 16gb
cpu: i7 2600k
cooler: h80
gpu: gtx570 tiwnfro
psu: corsair 850tx

is it worth trying memtest or wont it start before shutting down again?

Thanks Ali

Could you be a bit more specific with it shutting down. What stage of POST is it reaching? Does it "cut out" or actually power down etc?

Have you managed to install Windows on it?

so it powers up all the fans and hdd etc for about 3/4 seconds, before displaying anything of bios it powers down like a reset button being pressed and then powers up again.

this is from shutdown, not using any sleep or hibernation etc, turn pc on...press shutdown to turn off.

yes i have managed to install windows and drivers as i previously stated its been fine for the past 2 days until today.

Sounds like either something is shorting the system or that your PSU is playing tricks. Check both :)

so if i put all 4 sticks in the pc does the power up/down thing, if i use 1 stick it powers and boots into windows. i have tried several configurations and sticks in different orders and it boots into windows.

if it was shorting or psu playing tricks surely it wouldnt boot? maybe im wrong i dont know much about these things. how would i go about checking this

I hadn't realised that was the case, sorry. To be fair, your OP wasn't the clearest.

Tried memtest? Download and burn the .iso... boot into it. Try each stick individually if it doesn't boot.

sorry wasnt the clearest! i am trying memtest within windows as dont have usb stick or blank cd at mo, will get tomo and try properly. but so far its been running for an hour and half and no errors as yet.

My guess it's a power problem. Either with the supply or the VRMs on the motherboard.

You've already eliminated the memory because you've tried alternative memory sticks in alternative banks. However, before you complete discard the memory, make sure you are running the modules at the manufacturers recommended settings. Try running the DDR3 at 1.65v.

If you can, try and swap the PSU for a known working one. Even if it's a cheap test PSU. This will be the only way to deduce the problem is with the PSU or the Mobo. If you are into PC building then it's always recommend keeping a spare known working unit around anyway.

so it powers up all the fans and hdd etc for about 3/4 seconds, before displaying anything of bios it powers down like a reset button being pressed and then powers up again.

I get this whenever I switch BIOS profiles or bump anything in the BIOS. It's default behaviour for dual BIOS boards. Subsequent boots are normal but if you're experiencing this everytime you boot then maybe it's something else

This may sound daft but is it plugged straight into the wall or is it in a multi socket adapter thing?

I built my PC in work connected to a 4 gang adapter and it worked fine but when I got home and plugged it into a 10 gang adapter it powered on for about 1 second and went straight back off agian. I now have it directly into a wall socket and all is fine :D

ok so after having pc finally working again last night and memtest running for 3 hours and 100% with no errors, turned off went to work today come home and back to square 1!!
i have put my ddr3 from htpc into the pc and it still wont boot, put the vengance into htpc and fires up fine.

im now about to use known working psu and check.
how do you go about checking VRM's on motherboard?

ok so known working psu and its still powering up and down, if i fiddle with or remove memory or turn off psu from main switch then on again it sometimes works and goes into windows.

so would it be rma on motherboard time?

i also have noticed this with mine,

To OP, basically from a cold boot, it starts up for 1 second, shuts down and then boots up normally,
i know its me, but that wouldn't bother me.
