This is not for me but a friend.

She bought a pc from overclockers http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=FS-213-OE&groupid=43&catid=2040&subcat=

It came today and i talked her through installing the graphics card and stuff which i am pretty sure she did right.

She's hooked her monitor up to the graphics card yet when she turns it on she doesn't get a display.

I am right to say the problem is that she has onboard graphics from the 2500k cpu and that the pc is displaying through this rather then the graphics card and we need to get into the bios and tell it to use the graphics card as the primary display.

I ask this because the motherboard is a Gigabyte Z68AP-D3 Intel Z68 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard [GA-Z68AP-D3] It only seems to have hdmi output which atm she doesn't have a cable for so we cant get into the bios.

Is there a way to default the display to the graphics card without going into the bios.

iirc, it should output to the graphics card by default if one is installed. Has the GPU definitely got power?

Also, double check the monitor works and maybe try a different cable.

What do you mean by install the graphics card? Install it in windows?

Try plugging the screen into the on-board video, if it works then, then it's likely the settings need changing in the BIOS.

Sorry i guess i wasn't clear, when you buy the pc the graphics card needs putting in the pc they don't ship inside case it gets damaged i guess.

We cant plug it in to the on board video cause its only hdmi out put and she seems to have every cable but that.

The monitor works and the cable she used it on her old pc and yeah pretty sure its got power, doesn't it make a nasty whining noise if it doesn't.

Just done some digging around and there was a guy with the same mobo graphic card combination and same problem he had to plug his display into the on board graphics and change the settings.

Guess she will have to wait till she can get a hdmi cable.

I didn't know this  How is the average Joe going to know what to do?! Surely packing the inside of the case would be a better idea.

Yeah they give instructions on how to install the card but she said they was hard to follow so i walked her through it.

I don't see how shipping a pc with the graphics card installed is any more risky then shipping it with the ram and cpu installed :P

Because generally they are quite heavy nowadays, and could snap or break the PCIe socket. It has to be assumed that couriers in general are not careful with anything.
