Hey guys,

Ive just ordered a new gaming rig and haven't really been around or active on these forums in a long time, but making my way back slowly..

this setup will be my first for an SSD and well ill list the other components below..

I was just wondering if you guys could help me out software wise, installation and performance tweak wise im gonna install my legit windows 7 I already have while i wait for windows 10's official full release.

what should I be doing when I set up my computer?
-Install windows, go for the latest service pack? then what tweak wise
and what free antivirus/spyware/adware software would people recommend?

and any good monitoring softwares/recommendation people would make for a new build please post below!

build is as follows..

Gigabyte GeForce GTX 980Ti G1 Gaming 6144MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card
Gigabyte Z97X-Gaming 7 - Devils Canyon Core i7 4790K CPU & Motherboard Bundle **£25 Saving**

what should I be doing when I set up my computer?

install windows 7 as normal and do all the windows updates as you normally would do. extra things I do to save on space on my OS SSD is as follows

- disable system restore and remove all restore points, nothing on my PC a format will not fix so no loss to me as no data kept on it.
- disable disk defrag, by default in windows 7 this is enabled. not required for SSDs
- lower down my virtual memory to min of 1024mb and a max of 2048mb, I have 6GB of ram and saves on space.
- after all updates installed run disk clean up and it will remove old updates its installed

space shouldn't be much of a issue though on a 1TB SSD lol

what free antivirus/spyware/adware software would people recommend?

there is loads out there which are free, few common ones are

- AVG
- Avast (use the free edition on a laptop)

Only have your SSD plugged in when installing Windows 7, plug in any other drives to your motherboard after the installation otherwise you will have bootmgr on another drive and that will make things messy later on.

yeah well the only HD going in is my SSD not bothering with a storage one for now as ill just use my portable for movies and stuff storage wise :)

so will I be right just putting in the SSD? just wondering i ordered an external usb optical drive with it for installing windows and when i need to use discs, will this work for installing and setting up windows right from the off?

should be fine. tell the PC to boot from the optical drive and then change to SSD after.

I do my installs from a USB stick as its easier

surely you would be better off getting the SP1 disc online and then burning that to a USB stick to save on the amount of updates?

what version of 7 is it?

think its the one with SP1 updates, I dunno honestly i put it on disc a long time ago haha, but either way it doesn't matter, its worked and then the updates were like 1gb and only took like 15 mins so its all good! :)

Microsoft Security Essentials and Malware Bytes are what i use. was told when getting the malware bytes one to not select the free trial of premium.

yeah i didn't select the premium trial, as no point tbh, i used blackvipers registry tweaks but should I revert these? and following seans windows 7 guide with my setup is there any need to change the page file and if so do i turn it off or just lower it?
