After much deliberation I seem to be heading towards a complete rebuild rather than the partial upgrade I was thinking of. I'm still aving doubts, b'cos of the cost, and wondering if the time is right. Please let me know what you think.
New system to include:-

Intel Core 2 DUO E6700 2.67GHz 'Conroe' 4Mb Cache LGA775 606793 Corsair Twin2X 2GB DDR2 (2x1024MB) XMS2 9136C5
Tagan TG900-U95 900W ATX2.01 Turbojet Quad SLi Compliant
eVGA 122-CK-NF68 nForce 680i SLI (Socket 775) DDR2 Motherboard
2x BFG nVidia GeForce 8800GTX 768MB DDR3 Dual DVI/TV Out (PCI-E)

If this is a good time to go for this lot, do I really need 2 of those 8800's or would 1 be enough? Games most played are Medieval2, F.E.A.R., Oblivion, Dark Messiah, COD2, Doom3 etc.

Also better get the tape messure out for those cards, to see if I need a new case or not...

Thanks
Mark

Yeah, the sig needs sorting out ;)

As for it being the right time, the time is good, but it looks to me like we're at the very start of a new generation of graphics cards and processors... but you can always come up with an excuse for waiting, as there's always new things coming out ;)

I'd go for that upgrade you've specced out, although I would only get one 8800 and put the money towards a new graphics card when new ones come out :) I don't think you'll need two 8800's for a while yet!

Yeah just get one 8800 you can always add another later. You can then cut back your PSU requirement. Without a massive screen you could probably easily get away with the 8800GTS rather than GTX.

Thanks for the advice. HP7909, I can't just upgrade to the 8800 because I have a socket 939 board, so it would have to be a x1950xtx type card. But if I'm changing the board, I may as well go Intel, and then DDR2 etc which is why I'm thinking of changing everything.
One question though. I built my existing pc from parts totalling about £1600 back in March 2005. I'll keep the raptor, but then sell the rest. How much should I ask for my current system (excluding the monitor as well)? If I only need 1 card, I'll get a new case and LCD monitor as well. Was looking at the Thermaltake VE2000BWS Armour LCS Super Tower. Monitor wise I haven't a clue.

Thanks

Hi hp7907,
According to the DFI website, the board I have is only compliant with crossfire set up, not SLI. But if you can show me where it says otherwise I'm happy to be proven wrong.

Sorry, meant that it can support a single card (offcourse) not SLi. ATI/NVIDIA chipset, does not mean that it cannot take a (single) GFX cards form either manufacturer :)

Oh...

Note: These cards require PCI-E x16 slots, they will not function in a x8 slot so for SLi you need dual x16 mainboard. Finally 500W minimum for PSU and 600W+ is recommended
Mixed opinions on PSU. Some websites say (reputable) 400W PSU for single GTS or 450W PSU for single GTX

Hi boy.

Go for

- E6600

And you're set to go :D

Thanks for all the advice people. Just for the record, I've taken some advice from another board as well, and they suggested waiting until the ATI R600 comes out. I think for now, I'm just going to get a new monitor. The new rig will have to wait. As long as it's built in time for Crysis, I'll be happy :)

Thanks again

This?

dude wait.............................................................. Honestly let dx10 pan out and see where the chips fall. It could be that it would be a mistake. I would say Get a 8800GTX only and make do with your rig. Then put EVERYTHING on Max detail so it stresses the card not cpu. Then you can wait a few months with a l33t pc, and then upgrade to quadcore :D stick in another 8800GTX with the money you will have saved and you will have a Quad core Dual 8800gtx pc. Hell you e penis has flopped of the table and onto the floo. ;)
