Hi. I'm thinking of upgrading me pc - new mobo, cpu, mem, gfx. was looking to spend £750 max. anyone got any suggestions?

was thinking along the lines of:
Asus P5W64-WS Pro Intel 975X (Socket LGA775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard
Intel Core 2 DUO E6300 "LGA775 Allendale" 1.86GHz (1066FSB)
OCZ 2GB (2 x 1GB) PC2-6400 Dual Channel Platinum Revision 2 XTC Series DDR2
EVGA GeForce 7950 GT 512MB GDDR3 HDTV/Dual DVI (PCI-Express)

total: £727.22 (inc VAT and Shipping)

would that work?

i just need something that will last the next few years and that is easy to upgrade, without having to replace a lot of components - hence the mobo above, as it supports quad core.

Current PC spec:
Asus P4C800-E Deluxe
Intel P4 Prescott 3Ghz
Geil 1GB PC4000 Ultra Platinum
Sony 16x DVD-RW
Western Digital Caviar Special Edition 250GB
Western Digital Caviar Special Edition 160GB
X-Pro 460W Power Supply
Coolermaster 80mm Blue LED Fan (x3)
Logitech Internet Pro Keyboard
Logitech MX510 Optical Mouse
Sunbeam Samurai (Black)
ATI Radeon 9800XT 256Mb
19" Samsung SyncMaster 920N
Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Fatal1ty FPS Edition + HS600 Gaming Headset

Welcome to the forums, there are quite a few motherboards that will support quad-core I believe and that is a pricey one. It is also based on the 975 chipset which isn't usually the best for overclocking the CPUs below the 6600(the 965 chipset is better). A Gigabyte DS3 or DS4 might be better and they support quad core see here.

The Geil PC6400 is on This Week Only so is cheaper and has equivalent specifications to the OCZ.

You may also need to consider a new PSU or at least adapters, the X-Pro is an excellent PSU but you will be testing it more and PSUs do become less efficient over time plus it isn't ATX2.0 compliant.

Also your signature is way oversized, you can have a single picture of 20k or less(up to 400x75 I think from memory) and one line of text or up to 4 lines of text. :)

so what about this then:

Intel Pentium 4 805 Dual Core "LGA775 Smithfield" 2.66GHz (533FSB)
Asus P5B Deluxe (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard
EVGA GeForce 7950 GT 512MB GDDR3 HDTV/Dual DVI (PCI-Express)
GeIL 2GB (2x1GB) PC6400C4 800MHz Ultra Low Latency DDR2 Dual Channel Kit
Zalman CNPS9500-AT Aero Flower (Socket 775) CPU Cooler
Thermaltake VA3000BWA Tsunami Dream SuperMidi Aluminium Tower - Black
Hiper HPU-4B580 Type R 580W Modular ATX2.2 PSU - Blue

Total: £789.46 (inc VAT + Shipping)

*sigh* my orginial budget when i started looking was £500. :(

So what about this then? Would this work? PSU any good?

I'd suggest something more like this, you don't need a new case unless you want one but here you have a great motherboard for overclocking, more or less the same graphics card as you originally chose and a good solid modular PSU.

MB-061-GI Gigabyte GA_965P_DS3 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard (MB-061-GI)
£89.99 £89.99
MY-058-GL GeIL 2GB (2x1GB) PC6400C4 800MHz Ultra Low Latency DDR2 Dual Channel Kit (GX22GB6400UDC) (MY-058-GL)
£139.99 £139.99
CP-135-IN Intel Core 2 DUO E6300 "LGA775 Allendale" 1.86GHz (1066FSB) - OEM (CP-135-IN)
£99.99 £99.99
HS-017-AR Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro CPU Cooler (Socket 775) (HS-017-AR)
£14.99 £14.99
CA-008-TG Tagan TG530-U15 530W ATX2.01 Easycon SLi Compliant Modular Silent PSU (CA-008-TG)
£62.99 £62.99
GX-090-LT Leadtek GeForce 7950 GT 512MB GDDR3 HDTV/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail (GX-090-LT)
£169.99 £169.99
Subtotal £577.94
VAT £101.14
Total £679.08

Why Intel Core 2 DUO E6300 "LGA775 Allendale" 1.86GHz and not the Intel Pentium 4 805 Dual Core "LGA775 Smithfield" 2.66GHz?

Because even the cheapest core 2 duo (e6300) destroys the older P4's, and overclocked it will be faster than a stock x6800 - the fasted desktop CPU available on the market.

Cheers for the help guys :)

talked to a few ppl and came up with this...

Intel Core 2 DUO E6300 "LGA775 Allendale" 1.86GHz (1066FSB) - OEM (CP-135-IN) - £99.99

Abit AW9D Intel 975X (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard (MB-107-AB) - £119.99

GeIL 2GB (2x1GB) PC6400C4 800MHz Ultra Low Latency DDR2 Dual Channel Kit (GX22GB6400UDC) (MY-058-GL) - £139.99

Hiper HPU-4B580 Type R 580W Modular ATX2.2 PSU - Blue (CA-006-HP) - £54.99

Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro CPU Cooler (Socket 775) (HS-017-AR) - £14.99

Thermaltake VA3000BWA Tsunami Dream SuperMidi Aluminium Tower - Black (CA-010-TT) - £63.99

OcUK MSI GeForce 7900 GTO SILENT 512MB GDDR3 TV-Out/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail (GX-041-OK) - £153.99

Total: £761.32 (Inc VAT)

Comments?

if you're interested in overclocking (which given the processor, ram and cooler should be easy), then I would go with the DS3 mobo, unless there's something you specifically want on the ABit.
Can't find any info on how the standard AW9D clocks..
Seems like Allendales do better on a 965 chipset.

will it make that much of a difference if its a 975X chipset and not a 965 chipset?

the reason i was thinking about that mobo was the fact that supports ATI CrossFire and Nvidia dual Graphics. its also quadcore.

I'd change that to either a Seasonic or Enermax or Corsair or Tagan. Then, something like this...
  • Seasonic S12 500W Silent ATX2.0 Power Supply (CA-001-SS) £67.99
  • Intel Core 2 DUO E6300 "LGA775 Allendale" 1.86GHz (1066FSB) - OEM (CP-135-IN) £99.99
  • Gigabyte GA_965P_DS3 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard (MB-061-GI) £89.99
  • GeIL 2GB (2x1GB) PC6400 800MHz Value DDR2 Dual Channel Kit (GX22GB6400DC) (MY-063-GL) £154.99
  • Connect3D ATI Radeon X1900 XT 256MB GDDR3 AVIVO TV-Out/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail (GX-053-CO) £144.99 :p
  • Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro CPU Cooler (Socket 775) (HS-017-AR) £14.99
  • Antec Nine Hundred Ultimate Gaming case (CA-065-AN) £63.99 :D
  • Subtotal £636.93
  • VAT £111.47
  • Total £748.40
You can compare C2D chips with others here. Graphics cards here ;)

Can't say I know how much difference it makes. Was just going by a quick forum search really. edit: although if you're looking to upgrade to quad then it might be better with 975...

It does support crossfire, but 'NVidia Dual Graphics' isn't the same as SLi - although I think you can use hacked drivers. If you want true SLi support I think you need an nVidia chipset mobo at the mo. The DS3 and DS4 also support Quad Core with a simple bios update.

Don't let me sway your decision too much as I'm not hugely experienced here, and I am biased in that I own a DS3..
