Hello,

Its new PC time as my current machine struggles with games and multitasking.
Current spec: i7 930, P6X58D, 6GB RAM, ATI 5870, Samsung 1TB F3 (I realise I could just upgrade the GPU but this lot is 8yrs old now so time to freshen it all up).
  • Budget: Ideally around £1k, it's already gone above but I'm trying not to go crazy, hopefully under £1.5k.
  • Usage: Games (FPS, RTS, MMO) + Streaming.
  • Monitor/Res: DELL U2715H which is 2560x1440.
  • Performance requirements: I'd like 60fps+. I'm keeping my options open for a GSync monitor and realise the spec probably won't do 144Hz at this Res.
  • Theme: Primarily black theme running through here so I'd like to keep that, any other colours should be minimal and white/metal/silver.
Comments:
I'm pretty much set on the case and motherboard now - if I stick to LGA1151.
I was toying with the idea of an X99 build, but it ended up being a lot more expensive so I think this should do just fine also why I went i7 6700 over the i5 6600.. but could change that to save some money.
If there is an X99 build you'd recommend around £1.5k please do post it so I can check it out. I'd love to get the latest tech into this.
Could I get away with a GTX 1060 with this resolution and game performance?
I considered getting an M.2 950 Pro for Win10 and selected games. Dropped it to keep price down and was advised it isn't so good. What does OcUK think? Would be easier to have from the start rather than add later.

My basket at Overclockers UK:

Total: £1,397.79
(includes shipping: £0.00)

Please OcUK offer me your guidance or at least some feedback that it's a decent build and I'm OK to order. Hopefully no new tech due in the rest of 2016... :D

Thanks.

It works and is compatible.

550W PSU will do also, or 750W if you want to do SLI.

I just tried doing a spec in white,

A 1070 will be good for 1440P res.

I do like m.2 drives, the new polaris range is faster than the 950pro versions.

My basket at Overclockers UK:

Total: £1,538.74
(includes shipping: £0.00)

This board has a full speed m.2 slot (32GB/S) and USB3.1 and typeC.

My basket at Overclockers UK:

Total: £1,486.82
(includes shipping: £0.00)

This board does not have a full speed m.2 slot, its more like 10-14GB/S and no USB3.1 etc.

Hi stulid, thanks very much for the quick reply.

The Polaris M.2 range only comes in Green PCB? Which kind of messes with case themes. :(

That's a decent price on an X99 build, I'm going to have a play around with those parts.

Anyone have commendations on PWM case fans? I was thinking of getting some Noctua NF-A14 but wondering if there is something better to consider.
To start with the case needs 2x 140 in the roof and may replace the 4 NZXT fans eventually.

Yes its green but on the Gaming7 for example use the m.2 slot thats covered by the gfx slot and not the top one.

Same with that X99 ulra gaming, looking at the picture theres two and one is going to covered by a fat gfx card mostly.

Right.

Unfortunately on the MSI Z170A Gaming Pro Carbon it's above the first GPU slot.

Looking at a picture even with my chosen CPU cooler it is still visible when directly facing.

Not my pic but found online

Drop in a 6 core 12 thread Xeon and overclock it along with 3x8gb of fast 1.5volt DDR3 if the P6X58D board has support.

Thanks for the idea, hadn't considered a new CPU. I might think about doing this as I was going to keep my old hardware around. Having said that these Xeons seem to go for quite a lot on ebay, maybe a lot of others have had similar idea.

Still need to look properly at an X99 at a similar price point. I swapped the MSI 1070 ARMOR OC for the PALIT 1070 SUPER JETSTREAM after reading about those DDR5 issues with some MSI and the Palit seemed to be recommended over it anyway for £30 more.
