Everything's plugged in properly and i have selected the dvd drive to boot first but it says 'reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key'?

I had something similar when I built my machine. It just recognised it eventually. I changed the boot order to HDD first and then back to CD/DVD ROM drive and it was OK

Mine drive wont recognise Bootable CDs if its on a specfic controller ont he mobo.
If your mobo has more than one SATS controller try connecting to the other one.

Does the disc work in another drive? Just to rule out the vague possibility that the disc is unreadable.

Edit: ignore - seen that you were transferring it to a USB boot drive. Did that not work?

How did you get on with a bootable USB?

Personally, I used this application to make a bootable USB stick from my windows 7 disk and it worked great.

Once the bootable usb stick has been created, plug it in - then go and select the boot device to be the USB stick.
