Hi everyone, I want to get a new pc and well it is long overdue, I am still running on socket 939, got it 3 months before the announcement of its retirement, bought the whole system from here 4 and a half years ago. Anyway it would be great if I could get some help, I am looking into just buying the mobo, processor and RAM because I have the other parts for the system.

I was thinking more along the lines of getting this mobo and processor.

I have no idea about the RAM, what CL, speed and brand I should get which will not be limited by the mobo.

I have a price range of max 700 pounds

I run a 650 watt PSU, have a 512mb 4850 ATI graphics card and WD caviar black 1TB, also run a very old secondary HD PATA st380011a, would that be enough until I decide to do a crossfire or maybe get better graphics card later, but as of right now, would that be enough?

Also I was told I may need to water cool my system from becoming hot, say for example I wanted to encode something and I wanted to leave my pc running overnight, I do not want it to get overheated. The motherboard has a pci heat sink and a water block but I was wondering what water cooling system I could buy to compliment those capabilities.

I am not looking to overclock so sorry to disappoint pretty much everyone here but I would prefer the option of having the warranty just in case something goes wrong.

Thanks in advance :)

Hi there, Welcome to the forums :D

What will you be using the system for? You mention encoding, will that be a main usage, or will you doing other intensive things with it?

Also, what is the brand and model name of your 650W PSU? What case do you currently have?

Finally, are you interested in overclocking?

You won't need water unless you plan to over clock the **** off what you buy, thats the idea of water cooling, and you don't want to from what you say.

That motherboard is way too expensive!

Have a look at this! This will handle all your needs and won't overheat if left on over night! Plus, it's well within your budget!

I plan as part of my IT course(just begun in November), setting up a few virtual machines to test run them unfortunately, my system is too slow to do anything with them (2gb RAM, I could upgrade but 1, processor is slow and 2. the DDR ram is expensive.), there is only very little RAM to go around, also on windows 7 and it is very frustrating even if I am just setting them up for practise, the brand and model of the PSU is Cooler master RP-650 PCAP passive PFC, I think the case came with it, its an ATX case.

I may overclock but only after the warranty runs out, my tutor said he would send me some manuals if I ever do decide to overclock.

Ah, then in that case your i7 plan seems like a very good one. It is a great way to get workstation power at consumer prices.

The spec suggested by Norman is good: the motherboard is great, as is the RAM. However, if you are buying it this way I suggest spending the extra £5 and get the retail version of the CPU for the extra 2 years of warranty.

Alternatively, you could buy an OCUK pre-overclocked bundle. These are overclocked and stress tested by OCUK. Compared to a stock system, this will be MUCH faster, and only a bit more expensive.

Nice prospective build to be honest. Has potential :)

I believe the warrenty on pre overlocked builds are 12 months
maybe wrong though.

As for the warranty on the overclocked bundles, i'm not certain but I would imagine that its a year. I suggest sending a webnote to get a definitive answer.

As for the offer, these offers change on Wednesday at around mid-day. So if you order it earlier than that, you will get it on the deal.

ah alright thanks for your advice, I don't think I can get it by wednesday, its friday that the paycheck comes in, I guess I will have to wait and see, maybe they will have a better overclocked option, guess I'll be forced to be taking a gamble, thanks for your help, I think I will opt for the overclocked bundle.

I don't think you shuld be too worried about the cpu breaking! These cpus are known to easily reach upto 4ghz and beyond with the right cooling, especially with the new 930 model. You'd be extremely unlucky if you overclocked it to say - 3.8ghz and it broke! Ocuk wouldn't be selling overclocked cpu bundles at 4ghz if they were going to break quite easily.
