Hi all,

I have been looking through the forums and the website to get some ideas for a new rig.

I built my last one some years ago which is:

Antec Gaming case
Q6600 quad core
nvidia nforce 610i
nvidia Geforce GTX260
Crucial Ballistix 2 x 4GB DDR2
Windows 7 Ultimate 32bit

I used to be a gamer but don't tend to do so much now, but my old rig has served me well for quite a few years but after a mobo & ram failure I have decided to build me a new one. I mainly use my PC for work (office work/email/google maps), downloading/watching TV shows, occasional dvd ripping/coding. The only game I tend to play now is Civilisation (rarely).

Below is the spec I have come up with:

YOUR BASKET
1 x Gigabyte GeForce GTX 970 G1 Gaming 4096MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card £289.99
1 x Intel Core i7-4790K 4.00GHz (Devil's Canyon) Socket LGA1150 Processor - Retail £275.99
1 x TeamGroup Vulcan RED 16GB (2x8GB) DDR3 PC3-19200C11 2400MHz Dual Channel Kit (TLRED316G2400HC11CDC01) £119.99
1 x Microsoft Windows 7 Professional SP1 64-Bit - OEM (FQC-08289) £116.99
1 x Samsung 250GB SSD 840 EVO SATA 6Gb/s Basic - (MZ-7TE250BW) £104.99
1 x EVGA SuperNova G2 750W '80 Plus Gold' Modular Power Supply £79.99
1 x Gigabyte Z97P-D3 Intel Z97 (Socket 1150) DDR3 ATX Motherboard £61.99
1 x Corsair Hydro H55 Quiet Liquid CPU Cooler £52.99
1 x Zalman Z1 Midi-Tower USB 3.0 - Black £30.95
1 x LG 24x DVD±RW SATA ReWriter (Black) - OEM GH24NSC0.AUAA10B £13.99
Total : £1,161.96 (includes shipping : £11.75).

A lot has changed since I last built my old PC so I am not 100% confident with the new stuff I have spec'd (compatability, practicality etc..) so any useful input would be greatfully appreciated. I asume that I have overkilled it with the spec for my type of useage, but my budget is £1000 tops and ideally I would also like a screen to go with this but could maybe wait and get one at a late date.

Cheers

Thanks for the input guys. I had a feeling is was over killing it a bit, but I just thought that as I did it last time to a decent spec that if I did it again it would last me for a good few years again.

Could some one put me a spec together based on the i5 CPU please. I would like a 250GB SSD & regular HD for data. I will need an OS as my old PC will still be used but at work.

This is the moniter I have been looking at:

YOUR BASKET
1 x Asus VE248H 24" Widescreen LED Multimedia Monitor - Black £149.99
Total : £159.59 (includes shipping : £8.00).

Is this any good?

When I built my last PC the question of Intel vs AMD was answered with Intel as they were generally better processors for the extra cost. Can the same be said now or does the extra cost not out weight the performance/reliabilty?
