We don't need another standard forced on us yet, PCI-E is good enough to handle two Geforce GO 7900's in one slot (7950GX2) so it'll last a good few years yet.

I have PCI-X slots on my daily use desktop. If that's not mainstream, I don't know what is.

What advantage would most consumers garner from PCI-X slots? Perhaps high-end sound cards might run a bit better. Other than RAID/SATA/PATA/SCSI controllers what needs the greater bandwidth of PCI-X?

Not really no. 64 bit PCI-X 533MHz provides 4.3GB/sec of bandwidth. PCI-Express x8 is 4GB/sec.

Easy. 10 gigabit is 1.25 gigabytes a second. Two 10Gb links is 2.5GB/sec - still leaves plenty of bandwidth spare on a PCI-X slot.
