New Pet Insurance Issue

Hi all,

In June, our youngest cat needed £3k spending on him as somehow he sustained a massive hernia, probably from a car, we didn't have pet insurance as our 2 other cats, other than the odd inflammatory shot has cost us nothing over the past 8 years.

Anyway, I bought some pet insurance for all 3 cats at the end of June for £65 a month, a week later we were sent a letter stating they need the complete medical history from a vets before they will insure us with the letter very specifically informing us that we were not insured. The vets were an absolute nightmare about this, completely refusing to give us the history, stating data protection, I mean, seriously? This can't be right? They did eventually agree to giving the information directly to the insurers if they were contacted.

So, it seems the vets did provide the information, but again we were sent another letter asking for medical history, for example, for one cat they wanted medical history after Feb 2018, they weren't provided any by the vets because this was the last time he had gone to vets, again the letter specifically stated we were not yet insured.

Eventually, 6 weeks after I took out the insurance, we were sent our policy documents and finally insured, however they have the policy starting from when I initially applied and are planning on taking £150 for the first payment for back dated payments. I wasn't very happy about this, because, we weren't actually insured during this period, if something had happened, they wouldn't of paid out, so I think the policy start date should be when we were actually sent the policy documents and told we were now insured.

I contacted the insurance company, explained the situation, but they've stated as the policy has been reinstated and is not considered a new policy nothing can be done, they've even admitted we weren't insured during this period but are flatly refusing to do anything about it, we can't even cancel without penalty either.

Am I right to be aggrieved by this or is this how it's done?

Was this the insurer offering you the cheapest quote by any chance?

Anyway, the insurer is correct. If you did have an incident during the period in which they said you weren't insured, you would now (that is, now that your policy is 'active') be able to claim for anything that happened between the date of you taking the policy out. Hence, the insurer can and should charge you for that period because they were exposed to you/your pets, as a risk, during that period. If one of your pets had an issue during the period in which you were told you weren't covered and you ended up paying for it out of your own pocket, you would now be able to claim for it (subject to the normal policy conditions imposed on you).

In simple terms, you are now covered and that coverage actually extends backwards in time to when you first took the insurance out and because of that, you are rightfully being charged £150.

EDIT: Looks like I didn't read the fine print of your post. If they are saying they would not have paid out for incidents occurring in this period, then you should be demanding a refund. In essence, they are making a riskless profit which isn't how insurance works, the last time I checked anyway.

I would double/triple check the point about them not paying out if you had an accident in that period and made a claim today/at any point after finding out your policy is now active. Get their answer in writing because that could be pivotal to any formal complaint you make.

You need to change vets. They won't give YOU the medical history of YOUR cat because of data protection, but they will give it to an insurer? They have no idea what they're doing. I hope they understand animal welfare better than they understand data protection!

I'd also check how much they actually pay out for.

Many only pay upto a maximum amount (say a grand) PER condition PER insurance year.

We use Argos and so far, so good.

Only issue with any other Pet Insurance I have seen is they increase their premiums (sometimes by a lot) if you make a claim.

PetPlan will not (and did not) increase their premiums when we claimed (well over 15k) and they carry on covering anything claimed on.

I have had a claim this year for an entropion on my cat so it will be interesting to see what it goes up to at renewal time.

Problem is they have me by the short and curlies now as the entropion is an existing condition and if it happens again I won't be covered.

Thanks all for the replies.

The insurance is with Pet Plan.

I've spoke with Pet Plan further to try and get confirmation about the situation.

They didn't really answer my questions specifically, just kept repeating that we're now insured during the dates on the policy, they still stated I wasn't insured at the time but then state I'm insured between the dates, so, I think if I was now to make a claim from a month ago they'd pay out, but at the time I wouldn't of been able to, which is fine I suppose.

My interpretation too and if that is the case the £150 was rightfully charged.
