I have a K750i and before that I had the K700i. Now I wouldn't mind staying with Sony Ericsson but lately they seem to have made more phones for certain part of the markets and not a 'do it all' phone.

So now the w800i coming out is audio related but I have an iPod and I never use the audio on my current phone anyway. So i'm thinking of going down the 3.2 megapixel camera phone route instead.

This consists of the...K790/K800. Now basicly the K790 has the advantages of EDGE compatability where as the K800 has the 3G functions.

So now this is where i'm at a loss...I'm on Vodafone, and planning on staying with Vodafone;

  • What are the advantages of 3G?
  • How widely used is 3G? I don't live in a city and I'm wondering if I'm ever going to use the function.
  • What is EDGE?
  • Also, is it widely used and is it worth having?

So that leads me to the final question. EDGE or 3G?

Ok, first off, I think the only network offering EDGE is Orange (with their horrific network coverage :P ), EDGE is a slightly slower network connection than 3G, I think EDGE is about 276kbps, Vodafone wont support it. The advantage of 3G is a faster connection to the network (376kbps against GPRS which is 57kbps) So streaming video, faster downloads and video calling is possible, however, even with my 3G Sharp 903 I don't use these functions so I dont care about them. The only reason 3G comes into my life as a purpose is with my 3g data card for and internet connection on the move.

3g overall I think is overrated, UNLESS you enjoy the mobile internet experience, and want faster game/music/video downloads.

But in all respects the K800 will be such a good phone in the areas of screen resolution/memory/capability. The K750i has been out for ages, the next step K800 is out soon...best to wait for it or go for the Nokia N80 etc

If you're question is fundamentally EDGE or 3G.....3G is faster... so go for that.

EDIT - HSDPA is coming out from vodafone later this year which is capable of of 1-4MBPS, yes MEGABITSpersecond, not K's, so if you definitedly want that, wait till late 2006

Well I don't think that there is much point waiting till late 2006 because early 2007 (May) i'll get yet another phone.

So out of the two, 3G is one the to go for even if I don't really use it. And also 3G is more useable on the whole.

Brilliant, well answered :)

Cheers, David

In my knowledge, the K800i is very, very unlikely to be released in May... most sources seem to cite Q3 2006, which basically means anything between June and September (and more likely to be the latter than former, if anything).

well SE side, the only phone which is up from the K750 and K700 is the K800 (hence the model number). The nokia's are smartphones, and will be a bit bulky. IMO there really isnt anything that will compare the the K800 when it comes out, especially in regards to size.

The N80 is a slider smartphone with a 3mp camera, but I'm not expecting the camera to be all that, especially when the K800 even has a proper Xenon flash on it.

Its best to just wait I would say, if you were happy with SE.
