I have just got a new phone and was wondering how long my first charge should be and is it nessacery? the phone i have is the Sony Erricson K850i.

Thanks Luke

P.S Can I play with it while it is on charge or will the effect that battery life?

I usually let the initial charge run right out before I bother charging it. I wouldn't have thought playing with it will cause any problems.

Batteries nowadays aren't like they were 10 years ago.

First charges are necessary. 16 hours minimum they usually say. You can play with it in that time, it'll be fine.

Was a big discussion on this a while back. Have a search if you like :)

I usually do give my new batteries a 16hour charge. And after each of the first three charges I run it down until it turns itself off. Normally you shouldn't do that with LiPo/Li-Ion batteries, but it needs doing at the beginning of its life cycle to calibrate the onboard voltage meter.

Playing with it during the 16hour charge will be fine, but don't take it off charge even when it says "fully charged". That will probably be a false peak, and once the voltage level drops off again, the charging circuits will kick back in.

This is what I do with all my batteries and they all seem to serve me perfectly :)
