How long does it take a new line to "settle down"?

Just had a brand new line installed, but BT Wholesale estimates the line speed as 1Mbps. I presume it needs to settle down a bit, but just wondering how long this takes.

Walking distance to the exchange is 400 meters, of course the line could be longer, but it's a former Post office telephone building.

I don't have any stats it's a telephone line, there is nothing attached to it.

I was just curious as the BT wholesale number checker said estimated line speed is 1Mbps

I'm going to be ordering broadband soon anyway as my VM account terminates at the end of the month.

Despite there not being a BT line there, the guy didn't seem to need to do anything at the exchange, he just opened up a man hole marked "post office telephone" that's rigth outside and had a play.

Is this number new to the property? It could be that it's querying old plant record for the number which may have been in use on the outage reach of the exchange.

It can take a few days for the speed to increase towards your ultimate best speed.

My estimate on my shortish line was 4-5Mbit. I actually get 21 Mbit with Sky. I just think they didn't know what it was going to be so shoved a default speed on it. Sounds like its the same with yours. If it is 400M you'd likely see a good connection speed.

The exchange is in the next street but the line comes down a pole behind my house so the line is around 600M actual length based on my attenuation of 8 dB.

If it is a brand new line with BT, it can take anything upto 28 days to "register" properly on their systems to give an accurate estimate of potential broadband speed.

Seems to have updated:

Your exchange is ADSL enabled, and our initial test on your line indicates that your line should be able to have an ADSL broadband service that provides a fixed line speed up to 2Mbps.

Our test also indicates that your line currently supports an estimated ADSL Max broadband line speed of 7.5Mbps; typically the line speed would range between 6.5Mbps and 8Mbps.

Our test also indicates that your line currently supports an estimated ADSL2+ broadband line speed of 15Mbps; typically the line speed would range between 8.5Mbps and 18.5Mbps. Our test also indicates that your line could support an estimated ADSL 2+ Annex-M broadband upstream line speed of 1.5Mbps and downstream line speed of 15Mbps; typically the downstream speed would range between 8.5Mbps and 18.5Mbps.

Now I just need a good provider. Vivacity and Xilo both use the C&W network, but i don't think C&W allow interleaving to be left off.
