Hi

My father is hating his phone atm its a

Sony Ericsson Xperia™ X8

It feels sluggish and slow with horrible call quality also the texting is a nightmare with its tiny tiny asian style keyboard(even when used on side it allways double taps wrong words ect)

Anyhow, i looking for a new phone for him with a budget of around £150 ish.

So far i considering

he BlackBerry Curve 8520 (seems like lots of people have this wrong and seems pretty good, right?)

BlackBerry Curve 9300 Black

Orange San Francisco Android (have heard it lot smoother and faster than current x8 and getting good reviews)

Will be a PAYG contract or depending on how good maybe a SIM monthly contract ie 30 day rolling with option to stop anytime ect.

Thanks

It's a pretty average small phone aimed at kids/tweens which is why he's not getting on with it. Those phones listed couldn't be more different for what it's worth. The 8520 is not a good phone despite it's sales - it's sold a lot because its cheap and easy to sell to people who don't understand it costs RIM about £40 to make with its bargin basement parts, is 2G only and 18 months old. the 9300 is a MUCH better phone by an absolute mile but it's not in the same real area as a SF. Ones designed to run as, well, a blackberry with physical keyboard and the other is a touchscreen Android.

Take him to a shop and get him to try some out. It sounds like he didn't do this for the X8.

i think the problem was going to a phone shop in the first place tbh, as most phone shops you cannot even try out the phone before you buy, ie plastic pretend screen covers screen ect

i have seen a mate use a HTC dream with the pull down keyboard which looks good, but unsure if they stil make them and how good it would be.

what other phones would be a decent choice then to add to list..

so far we have.

Blackbury 8520/9300(is it really a mile better though to justify the price increase? isnt it just 3G and that it?)

HTC dream
Orange San Francisco Android (would it be different compared to the X8 or just the same ?)

Palm pre 2(never seen people with it so little unsure atm)

get him something with a hardware keyboard.. while i don't mind typing on my SF i can see a lot of people actually hating it.

the CPW has re-opened near my house and all the headsets they have are the real deal - you can actually play with all of them - used to be the fake headsets before re-opening

just to add some of the most anoying issues with the x8 which he hates and i also starting to get anoyed with are:

1:Unlock patten followed by "slide to unlock", no way to have unlock patten only...grr 2x locks stupid idea.

2: phone screen turns off while talking, very anoying if you want to change call settings while on phone/end coversation.

any more phones be welcome/ if you have any of the above love to know how they are to use.

am i correct in saying the pre palm 2 ect has access to google and its services???

so far its down to those 4 phones ect but would like to know if there are others i have missed.

The Pre 2 is brilliant but I think the qwerty keyboard will be a bit too small...

Get him to try out a 4" - 4.3" touchscreen (DHD, SGS, HD7 etc) They offer the best typing experience for fat thumbs. You might be able to get one for ~£150 second hand.

i wouldnt say fat hands he just isnt a asian dude with tiny fingers tbh.

It quite hard though to try out some of the phones suggested as a lot of shops just dont sell them as they want to push the more exspencive phones/ useless phones which you dont want to try out.....ie the X8 that he ended up buying lol.

Palm pre 2 is sounding like a great phone but given NO ONE in the UK actually markets it, it near impossible to try it out at all.

Then the blackbury would be the second option but given you now saying its crap im unsure what to believe

Orange SF is very much hyped up atm but why is this , i have no idea as it seems just like any other phone out there........

confused a lot, too many phones, used to be easy, Nokia 3310 simples...

The Pre 2 has smaller buttons and they're recessed/housed in a slider compared to a BB 9700 (which is better to type on)
Either way I find it much easier to type on a 3.7"+ touchscreen in landscape mode :p

Get him to try out a BB 8520 and Samsung Galaxy S at a phone shop.

the Samsung Galaxy S is too exspencive tbh .

sinse i been unable to find any shop that actually has a palm pre 2 it seems it no longer a viable option

so we down to either a blackbury or a orange SFC.....

Out of interest,

He does like google mail system on the x8 where it automatically is sycned with his phone,

does the blackbury allow for gmail /google to sync with it ie contacts and stuff ?as i personally have never used blackburys before.
