Hi guys,

I figured this was best put in here rather than in the SFF subforum as it's not specifically about that.

Currently have a pretty decent PC (i7 5820K at 4.4GHz, 32GB RAM, GeForce 1080) and I'm happy with its performance, but it's not the most portable of things and I do find myself shifting it around reasonably often.

I'm looking to put together a second system, as small I can possibly get it (primarily with gaming in mind) which of course means an ITX setup. The main thing that's bothering me at the moment is that there are no ITX AM4 boards so Ryzen isn't an option just yet and with no info about anything other than the Biostar ITX board, I have no idea how long that will remain the case.

What would you guys do? Wait it out for some decent AM4 ITX boards and drop a 1600/1700 in there, or just grab an ITX Z270 board with a 7700K right now?

Or perhaps forget the idea entirely and just buy a half decent laptop instead.

The differences between AMD and Intel are small enough to not wait in my opinion. There is the question of future games taking advantage of more cores but I cannot for one second imagine that the performance difference will be huge.

The Silverstone Grandia GD09 HTPC case can take an ATX size board. Don't know if it would be portable enough for you though.

Gigabyte do have a B350 ITX board in the pipeline. I would assume that is also the case for the likes of Asus and MSI etc.

Decided to go Intel. I realise buying a setup now is probably not the best of ideas with Coffeelake on the horizon and Ryzen ITX boards will probably start flooding in before too long but I just couldn't be bothered to wait any longer.

Went for:

i7 7700K
Asus ROG Strix Z280I
16GB Corsair 3200MHz
GeForce 1080 Ti FE
650w EVGA SuperNOVA G3

Specifically went for that PSU because other people are running the same setup with no problems and it's small enough to fit in the case fine. For the case, I'm not entirely sure about it yet but I'll see when it turns up - a Fractal Define Nano S. I like the look of it and although it's not the smallest of ITX cases, it's still a decent size and I can use my spare H100i GTX with it too which is nice. I'll see how it goes :)

The EVGA G3 is a very good choice for the psu. Supposedly only 25 dBA under full load as well, so should be nice and quiet.

I would have gone for a different GTX 1080 ti though. You would have no issues fitting something like a Gigabyte GTX 1080 ti gaming oc into the fractal case. As long as you stick with a dual slot card under 315mm which the Gigabyte is.

Yeah I think that's a good call actually. From what I saw of the non-FE cards they were mostly taller than the FEs even though the length was ok so I wasn't too sure if they'd be too tall to get the side panel on the case.

I guess I'll be able to judge case space better when all the kit turns up. I don't mind using the onboard graphics to get up and running or chucking my regular 1080 in for a few days if I send the FE back to get it swapped for a custom card instead :)

That said, that Gigabyte card you've linked to there doesn't have the taller PCB that some of the others have so I guess that makes the decision easier.
