My rig is

i5 4690k coolermaster 212 cooler
gtx 960 evga ssc 4gb
8 gb ram
2 samsung evo 850 ssds

I have just upgraded my psu from a cooler master b500 to a corsair vs650.
I was advised by my local computer shop to upgrade to the vs650 as im wanting a gtx 980 or 970 soon. My question is will the psu be fine for my rig with a gtx 980/970 ? I have read online that the vs650 is not that good. I just want to know if it will be fine for gaming and a little overclocking.

Thanks very much

The Coolermaster B500 provides 408W on the 12v rail so yes okay for something like a 980 and a bit of overclocking it makes sense to change it instead of trying to scrape it, especially if it had a few years on it. Just unfortunate that the recommendation was a VS 650, which while it provides 600W on the 12v rail is a crappy range (the VS not all Corsairs) of PSU for a 970 or 980. This may have been due to budget considerations though, I don't know. It should be "ok" just that most people would be advised to get something better.

Yes I was on a budget but wish I would have thrown another 30 pound at it now and spent 70. I may see if I can return it as the guy said it would run a gtx 980 with no issue. Or do you think I should keep it as it will do the job?

Thanks for getting back to me

The VS series are terrible psu's and are even lower quality than the CX series. A decent quality 550w psu from the likes of EVGA/Superflower/Antec TP Classic would be more than enough for your pc even with a 980 in it and still have plenty of headroom for overclocking. However you are looking at £65-75 for one. At the moment if you don't mind hardwired cables the XFX TS750w at £72.95 is a no brainer. It's a gold rated Seasonic built unit with 744w on the 12v rail and a 5 year warranty. You really can't do better for the price plus it will allow for a second card to be added in the future if you wanted to go down that route.

My basket at Overclockers UK:

It's ok and a big step up from the awful VS they fobbed you off with before. It's a FSP built unit with the full 750w available on the 12v rail. The G2 750w would have been better as it has a 10 year warranty compared to the GQ's 5 years but you have ended up with a decent psu which is the important part. Hope you didn't pay too much for it as they are around £77 online. There's a review here.

That's good to know and thanks very much for the review link. I'm installing it tonight looking forward to it. I payed £77 for the evga. I was looking at the antec 750 tp which is better the evga or antec

Cheers

The Antec is a Seasonic built unit with 744w on the 12v rail. There's probably not a lot in it really although with the EVGA GQ being a newer platform it does have Eco fan mode while the Antec doesn't. When Eco mode is enabled the fan doesn't spin when the psu is under a certain load/temp so you get a silent psu until the unit hit's it's trigger threshold (40% load with your GQ). With your current spec the fan may not even spin up at all.
