Hey Guys,

I currently have a kit lens, and a 50mm 1.8 i have a 600d, but i want something pretty special i use it a lot for product photography, but im wanting to get into wedding/family portraits

What would you recommend, i've been told a sigma 30mm 1.4? or a 85mm 1.4?

I dont know what direction to go!

Depends what you think you need? Something a bit closer or something with a bit more range?

If you want something for portraits/macro product work I'd recommend the 60mm macro EF-S. Very sharp lens and a reasonable length for portrait.

What are you lacking currently with your two lenses? What can't you currently do?

What is your budget? What products do you shoot? Portrait photography you can already do with your 50mm. Does it have to be a prime? Why not something like the 17-55mm f/2.8 IS if you want to get into wedding photography?

If you want something wider I'd forget prime and get a sigma 18-35 1.8

Or for longer an 85 1.8 as it's a good lens and cheapish

When I was looking for such a lens I was completely torn between 17-55mm and 35mm f1.4 sigma

I went with the sigma... Definitely less practical. I have used it a bit.
I would say it isn't the best for fast moving objects. Or I struggle with it.
But on a tripod/static target it does produce some crackers.

The sensible option was 17-55mm

Well my kit lens is dead pretty much it has a fault, so i just have a 50mm 1.8 so i want something thats a bit more zoomed out and sharper! better built i want a real go to lens to keep on the body for everyday walking about and also shooting indoor family portraits etc

The 50mm is just to close!

I think I warned you that would be the case;)

I quite tempted by the 24mm pancake STM but for the OP I'm pretty sure the 17-55mm F2.8 would be a good choice :)

Sigma 18-35mm F1.8 wouldn't be a bad choice either

You need to work out what you want the lens for first.

- wide : 17 to 40 length
- portrait : 24mm to 100mm range
- telephoto: 70 to 200mm
- will you use it in low light conditions : F2.8 for stopping movement or is Image Stabliser (IS) a better option for landscapes & interiors.

Once you have answered the above then you can start shortlisting lenses.

I do like the pictures it produces (I still need to address the minor back focus)
I'm still happy with my choice too. But it's not an easy lens to work with.
I'm still unsure if it's my 60D or lens with focus speed

A lot of pics have been at f2 or below too

What do you guys think of these 2 lenses?

Sigma 17-50mm f2.8 EX DC OS HSM
Sigma 85mm f1.4 EX DG HSM

or do i go canon 85mm 1.8 / canon 17-55 2.8?
