new problems

well just now played for about 1 min, this time as i scoped in on cod4 and held my breath, my screen went into powesave, came out again, and i was at the desktop unable to resume. however, i did have the heartbeat constantly going which was quite cool.

Bum!

Now may be a good idea to do the desk fan test i suggested(?) - as you're treading water, somewhat, at the moment. You need to start getting your hands dirty ;).

And if you're able to, it would be good if you could answer the OS questions i posed earlier as it would give us a clearer understanding into how your system is run.

If the desk top fan test doesn't yeild any results you may want to consider uninstalling/reinstalling all your core drivers.

EDIT: I've just noticed you have a 9600gt - if none of the above works i would definitely plug that in and see what happens.

EDIT x 2: If it does transpire the gfx is overheating, and your warranty allows it, andi's option 2 (medium) could shave a considerable amount off your temps - if not it will have been good practice for option 3 (hard). Although, you're probably technically minded enough now for both options to be relatively straight forward and re-classed as 'time consuming necessities'.

sorry mate, im using windows 7 x64, build 7127. The drivers are downloaded straight from Nvidia's website, but i will update them now. I will try the desk fan thing.

Good luck, i hope you get some useful results - this build has been very troublesome - especially when considering it was your first!

Still, you've gained a lot of invaluable experience...

i agree completely. updating latest drivers and playing for 30 mins has given me no problems so far. looking good.

Seems hopeful, but you won't be entirely sure until it's proved itself stable over a few days.

Time will tell - keep all opposable extremities crossed...

although that temp is high on your graphic card but
If furmark did not give bsod, then games should not either (hardware based).
download latest bios/drivers for all your components and install them.

after you've done the above, Install everest and do a stability/stress test
on cpu, ram, hard disk etc. if you get fault eliminate 1 by 1 until you hit culprit.

have you done the obvious checks, checked bits n pieces are plugged in fully?

its quite possibly old/bad driver install or bad OS install.

once all the above is checked then you can start looking at hardware.

strange, in CoD4 today, after 2 rounds of perfection, the screen went black, then back to normal, and again, and on the third time it stayed black...no idea why. will try the fumark again.

Has it been running fine up until that point since you last posted with the new drivers?

Also, have you tried the desk fan test yet - and if you have was it still running that way when you experienced the above?

i tried the desk fan for around 30 mins of gameplay with no problems, however this was as the computer turned on, so the parts would have been cool already.

Ideally you need to keep this test running for a few days, every time you use the computer for gaming (if possible) - as it may well have coincidentally passed a quick 30 minute test.

If it doesn't crash after hours of gameplay, with the desk fan test, only then can you conclusivley say that it's made a difference.

If it crashes with the desk fan test you still couldn't rule out overheating totally (as you may have a corrupt part that has a low tolerance for heat) but it would certainly be a lot less likely.

However, if it doesn't crash with the desk fan we can almost certainly say that the problem is heat related - which helps isolate the problem a bit more.

ok, well i was playing with the desk fan on for around 3 hours, and no crash at all.

later on this afternoon, computer has been on all day, parts would be hot, etc. etc, i tried it again w/o the fan, and playing for an hour and half solid held no problems. I will keep trying and see how it goes.

Encouraging - i would leave the desk fan as part of your gaming setup for the next couple of days, without experimenting with anything else. Only then will we be sure that this is a heat issue if it doesn't crash at all over that period.

But initial tests look good - try not to be tempted to experiment with anything else as this will be a good test to get out of the way.

I know it's hard to resist experimenting with other ideas but troubleshooting without spare components is time consuming and has to be approached methodically otherwise you muddy the results/data you already have. (e.g. you only have 3 hrs of testing with the fan when you could have had 4 and half hours under your belt. ;))

Good luck with it - we may be getting closer to identifying your problem and hopefully it will turn out to be a simple matter of your gfx card overheating.

just quickly, if it is the gfx card overheating, what would the best coarse of action be? i can't return it to OcUK now i think..right?

You're fortunate that you bought a BFG(?) as their RMA process is one of the best - they have a base of operations of in Wales.

You would rma the card directly to them and then await their verdict - if it's proven to be faulty you'll be shipped with a new card, hopefully, within 7/14 days.

Although you're still within your first year so you could rma direct to the retailer - i confess i don't know which would be quicker. Perhaps a post in the customer service forum would verify the quickest solution?
