Looking to upgrade my machine but not sure if my board can take the i7 chip.
The board is a Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3R. Would it be worth it or just move onto another board?

cheers

You need an X58 board to run a Core i7 processor. You current board will run any of the Core 2 Duo or Core 2 Quad chips available, as long as your BIOS supports them.

Nope you board does not support the i7 cpus it's a totally different setup, you would also need new ram as well as the motherboard to go i7.

what setup do you have know, how much are you willing to spend and what dio you do with your computer.

I7 is a different socket whuch will atleast cost £500 to upgrade to but need to know current system and its use to know if its worth it.

i7 is socket 1366. You have LGA 775. Rather than spending a fortune on a i7 rig why don't you drop a quad core 775 cpu in? Depending on whether it's worth the jump from whatever you already have. How about posting your spec so we can see what you currently run?

cheers for the info.

current setup is

Intel Core 2 Duo E6600
Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3R
OCZ GameXStream 600w Silent SLI Ready ATX2
OcUK 4GB (4x1GB) PC2-6400C5 800MHz DDR2 Dual Channel
XFX ATI Radeon HD 4890 1GB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card

E6600's are good clockers and most will hit at least 3.2-3.4Ghz. Mine hit 3.8Ghz. That would certainly tide you over until you feel it's time to go the whole hog and buy a i7 rig.

I have the same board too (rev 2.1) in my second rig with a E5200.
