New Processor, concerned about my power supply?

Hello,

Soon I will be doing a long awaited upgrade on my processor. This is my current processor: http://www.******.com/product/242140
And I would like to possibly upgrade to the FX8350. I am aware that I will need to upgrade my motherboard for this upgrade, but I am concerned about my power supply
I have gone onto the ASUS power supply calculator and with all the hardware that I have, and it adds up to 550 watts when I have a 500 watt power supply

Will I need to upgrade to a 650 or even a 800watt power supply?

My hardware when the upgrade is completed will be as follows:
HD Radeon 6870
FX 8350 CPU
4GB RAM
Motherboard, still unknown.
Any more information that is needed, please request.

My knowledge in computing is quite limited so feel free to correct me on anything that I may have gotten wrong in the above post.

Also wasn't sure where to post this.

Many thanks

Matthew Ware

Its always a good idea to get a power supply which has roughly 50/100 watts more than required with 80%+ efficiency. Considering your setup id say go for a 700w+ Modular PSU.

What is your budget?

Have a look on OCUK and check out Seasonic, Corsair, OCZ. They all make a range of good quality supplies, too many to mention. It all depends what you want:

  • Modular
  • 80 + Bronze/Silver/Gold/Platinum
  • Wattage

What's the name of the PSU? You linked to a competitor and OcUK filtered it out.

A high quality 500w PSU will power that fine, PSU calculators usually over estimate to factor in poor quality PSUs.

On the other hand, what is your usage on the PC? For gaming, i5 is the CPU to go for, but for things like lots of video encoding, the 8350 is the better choice.

I have an Antec EarthWatts 500W 80%+ Efficiency PSU
I use the computer for gaming only, no media related work what so ever.
I would like a high end CPU. So it will last a while before having to upgrade again for newer games. Be it Intel or AMD. Granted I have only looked into AMD...
Like I said, I do not know my stuff when it comes to hardware, knowing what is best for what etc. All advice is welcomed!
