New project (now with updates!)

Well I finaly got it in the garage today after 3 weekends of clearing out, and 4 weeks after I bought it.
It's an MK indy, going to be powered by a yamaha R1 engine, limited slip diff, fully adjustable dampners and double wishbone suspension all round, paddle shift etc.
Should weigh in around the 400kg mark and make 160 bhp with a dynojet kit and decent exhaust, that's around 400 bhp/ton
simmialr builds with the ideal ratio diff see 60 in 3.5 to 3.8 seconds
Got the front suspension apart again to paint the front hubs in black rather that silver.
Engine cradle should be here this week, so I can get the supports and brackets welded in.... just gotta save up for the engine now....

Will look something like this when finished...

Impressive. Very impressive. How much do you think the end cost will be. And no. of man hours? Any welding involved?

I bough it part built off ebay for £970 which saved me about 700 quid over MK's starter kit price, it also came with an 1800 zetec, gearbox and bellhousing which i've since sold.
So far i've spent £1200, next major outlays are the engine (about a grand) exhaust system (300) dampners and springs (350)
Reckon i'm looking at 4-5k all told to get it on the road, which for something with super car acceleration and track proven handling is damn good!

Problem is Pez, no matter how light you make the car, you've still got half a tonne of metal in your face slowing you down pal. 0-60 in 2 weeks at least when you're driving her.
shut it ya codeye :p

That diff looks to be an open diff from a drum brake sierra, I'd swap it for one from a 2.0XR4x4 nice 3.92:1 with LSD

That's the plan, or just buy the diff it'self and convert the spline shafts to lobro joint bolt on jobbies.

Can I just ask how much of a job will this be, in terms of technical ability needed. I ask because a friend of mine has his engine off his written off Bandit650s, the bike itself is a cat B write off so he cant put it back on the road, but the engine still works so we are planning on putting it in a go-cart of similar.

Well you can buy chassis kits specificly for bike engines of all sorts.
I've never realy done anything like this before so it's not overly technical lol
wiring's the only thing i'm not looking forward to.
Clutch works off a cable same as it would in any car (unless it was hydraulic)
Gear shift you can either knock up a push/pull rod system or use cables again. I'm planning some sort of pushrod system to use with paddles behind the steering wheel.

finally picked up an engine this evening!
998cc 11000rpm goodness :D
Can get on with some more at last.
Brake pipes and drivetrain is all finished and in place now, just the engine cradle to weld in and I can get the plumbing and wiring done :)

The r1 engine i've piced up will make 160bhp with a dynojet kit and a free flow exhaust.

Plus it weighs 62kgs all told (about 100 less than a zetec and gearbox) and a nice sequential gearbox to go with my paddle shift :D

Wouldn't be a problem to get one in at all, wouldn't be cheap though.

My r1 lump cost me £500, throttle bodies and an ecu would be more than that, so bang for buck bike engines are great in light weight cars.

Plus once I get bored of the power I can always supercharge it :D

My engine in its cradle :D

Brake pipes

Rear pipes and new lsd to replace the open diff that was in before.
Converted the push in shafts to bolt on jobbies to fit the diff and painted the whole lot up :D

Now I just need to find someone with a welder to come weld in the brackets for the engine cradle lol

Wheels arrived today :D

Ordered the rest of the bits to get it finished too. Just waiting on them being made, MK are quite busy atm.

Get on with it Pez, didn't you start in 2003?
lol seems like that long ago, 2005 I think it was :p

Perywinkle - i take i you are Pezza from locostbuilders? ;-) i thought i recognised these pics elsewhere hehe. you have the same location too
roj tis me!

You gonna blow it?
Planning on supercharging it eventually :)

Noo, black on black with extra black. Stealth bomber! :D
I might add some red rim tape for a dash of colour ;)

hows it comming ?
Done **** all to it since the last update, had sod all work and even less money lol
Just dug it out from under all the building materials piled on it.

finally got some money in so i've ordered everything to finish it :)
Need the exhaust manifold before I can weld the cradle in, to make sure it doesn't foul any cross members.
Can't really do much more till then, plumbing, electrics, gear linkages etc.

finally got the parts I needed :D
10 hour round trip to pick up the bodywork and manifold, all neatly tucked away.

So I could actually get round to welding the brackets and chassis rail into the engine bay.
Not the prettiest welds, but they stood up to a few whacks with a lump hammer so I reckon they are strong enough.

Tasty pink primer lol

sprayed up with some matt black acrillic.

Fuel tank is in, fuel hard line in place.
Waiting on the front wishbones with the powdercoaters, then I can get the front shocks on. Treated it to some wilwood powerlight calipers too.

Hopefully get the engine in tomorrow. Need to get the sprocket off and the prop adapter on first. So Bought a ruddy great breaker bar :D

i'll grab some more pics tomorrow.

Engine is in :) Spent a fun 2 hours driving round the industrial estate trying to find the correct pitch bolts to mate the cradle to the engine block lol

Rad and asscociated plumbing tomorrow me thinks.
Torque resilient tube prop oredered.

So chuffed to be making progress after so long without funds :)

Christ didn't realise how long it's been since I did something with the car :o

Picked it up again a couple of months ago now, after 2+ years of zero progress (lost interest and money lol)

Mechanicly finished, all plumbing and brakes done, wiring run throughout chassis, engine loom stripped back and redundant circuits cut out.

After a few days messing around trying to sort an elctric reverse, I bit the bullet and purchased a MNR reverse box (did nothing for my low cost build budget, but it's a stunning bit of work)

Found a cage going cheap a few weeks back too, so that's another bit that needs welding in now.

Paddle shift system seems to work a treat :)

It's a mess of wires atm, but as soon as the tank is fixed i'm gonna try and start it up :D

Well it changes beautifuly atm up on it's stands.
I might invest in a flatshifter at some point for clutchless up and down shifts, ut for now it'll just be the paddles and clutchm (at least for down shifts)
