Hey all!

After a long time without a desktop I'm finally looking back to getting one and wanted everyones opinions. I've been using an i7 4710/16GB DDR3/GTX970M laptop and I'm sick of it!

So this desktop will be used with 3dsmax, Photoshop, Substance etc as well as gaming of course. Here's the build I've came up with so far:

  • Intel i7 5820k OEM
  • Asus X99 Strix Gaming
  • 32gb Corsair Vengeance LPX 3200mhz (4 x 8gb)
  • EVGA GTX 1080 SC
  • Creative Soundblaster Z
  • Samsung 850 Evo 1tb
  • WD Black 6tb
  • EVGA Supernova P2 850w
  • Define S Case
  • EK Predator 360

My last desktop I owned a couple of years back was a i5 2500k, 12gb DDR3, MSI HD7970 Lightning BE build. I'm hoping this setup will be a decent upgrade over that and my current laptop.

Anyone got any suggestions of things I should change or?

This will feel like a big ol' upgrade, the 1080 is a huge leap over the 970m.

A couple of points :
  • The PSU here is overpowered. 550w would suffice, up to 650 for upgrade or if you want best use of fabless modes.
  • No mention of your monitor or resolution? The 1080 will flourish on a 1440p

Otherwise, lovely pc you'll be delighted I'm sure.

Most MoBos these days have pretty decent audio built in, could save yourself £60 unless you really need to have a sound card?

I dont really need it. It's just I was always against sound cards but then I tried the Soundblaster Z on my old 2500k/Asus Z77-V Deluxe and there was a noticeable improvement in quality but I imagine the integrated audio on the X99 Strix is closer quality wise.

But the main reason I want the card is because of the downmixing to stereo for headphones that the Soundblaster does, it's phenomenal in games!

Yeah I know the PSU is overpowered, but two things, the price difference between the 650w and the 850w is miniscule, so I figured I may aswell go with the 850w. And also I've got headroom if I ever want to add another 1080 or anything like that!

I've got 2 1080p screens. Not looking to replace those!
