I turned 30 yesterday (christ i feel old) and managed to nag and drop enough hints over the past month for my girlfriend to buy me a PS3 :D

Have a few questions (and want a few opinions) about it with being new to the console.

It is the 80GB version and came with 1 dualshock controller and bundled with fifa 09 and killzone 2. First thing on my list of things needed is to buy a hdmi cable. Is the official one best? Are cheaper alternatives just as good? Also want to buy a wireless headset? Again is the official one the best? Cant find it on sale anywhere, everywhere's out of stock so is another brand just as good?

Although i'm happy with the 2 bundled games obviously i'll need a few more to keep me entertained. I've just ordered MGS4 and also streetfighter IV as both were quite cheap!

What games are the best for online team play/co-op? For example like CSS on the PC or halo on the xbox.

Cheers for any input :)

HDMI cable wise, buy a cheap one, i'd aim for £5-10, certainly don't go above £20.

Headset wise, certainly go for the official headset, it's pretty cheap and much better quality than the unofficial headsets (some of which cost even more!)

Killzone 2 is imo the best competitive online shooter the PS3 has to offer so you've got that side sorted

Resistance 2 has a great coop campaign that supports up to 8 players

There's loads of threads floating about that have lists of the best PS3 games, just search around a bit and you'll find a good selection.

I have the official headset got it for £18 and it is very good, definately a buy!

I don't have the official HDMI, I got mine from Zavvi shop for £5 and it works well. They're all pretty much the same, just the quality of components (I bought one from Home Bargains for £2 and wouldn't get a picture because the connection was rubbish).

I got a £10 HDMI cable from a rental place. It's braided and decent length and never had any problems with it. Don't need to go overboard with one unless you want to run it over the length of your house for some bizzare reason.

I got a really cheap HDMI cable from Argos, it's really short as my ps3 is right next to my TV, but the quality is spot on.

As said definately get the official headset, if you can't find it on it's own there are a couple of games i think that come bundled with it (SOCOM?) for not a massive amount more, and you could always sell/trade the game in if you don't want it!

I got a dirt cheap HDMI cable from a high street game retailer, and it's been fine; as HDMI works digitally, all cables will transmit the same information, and therefore provide the same picture quality.

Online multiplayer-wise, Resistance 2 is good, and I'd also recommend downloading the Fifa Ultimate Team mode if you're a Fifa man!

I bought a Motorola H385 headset for a tenner (around Christmas when all the official ones weren't in stock) and it's ace. Really good range and sound quality. I can't compare it to the official set, but can't complain about it either! Also means that I don't look like a goon when I walk around wearing my official Sony PS3 headset while on the phone :D

As all the online stores dont appear to have the official headset in stock (for a decent price at least) i'll head into town later and see if any shops have it in stock.

Edit: also dont have a spare ethernet cable at the minute, so i'll pick one of those up and get connected to the psn network!

It's as rare as rocking horse poop, but i suggest waiting for it to come back in stock (there's a steady flow into stores) rather than buying an unofficial headset. If you must, but a good bluetooth headset that's marketed for mobile phones, all the heatsets i've experienced that are marketed for the PS3 are overpriced tat.

Do not buy the giotek headset. It's good for sound quality but breaks if you so much as look at it strangely.

The PS3 has built in wireless, but a ethernet cable is indeed more ideal if its not too much hassle to hook it up.

The official headset supports a unique High Quality mode which is almost akin to talking on an ISDN phone, it's pretty clear. So I'd hang on for it to come into stock.

I don't think Home Bargains is a OCuk competitor so I'll let you know I saw them selling HDMI cables for £2.99.

So just be careful!

Forgot the PS3 had wi-fi, no need to buy an ethernet cable, i've hooked it up to my wireless router and all working fine. :)

Went out today and bought a second dualshock controller, also bought a copy of SOCOM bundled with the official wireless headset. And picked up a HDMI cable for £9.99 that should have been £14.99 so now all setup, just waiting for MGS4 & streetfighter IV to get delivered this week :D
