I'm in the market for a 700-750w PSU. I had my eyes set on the Corsair AX750 until I read all the issues with whining coils, buzzing etc. According to Corsair it's normal as long as you can't hear it over anything else and with the case closed. This doesn't really sound very good to me if you're forking out for a premium PSU. I've had my 575W Jeantech for 5 years and it's never made the slightest peep.

Having said that, anyone have any suggestions for a decent 85%+ power efficient PSU?

Thanks :-)

Thanks Stulid

Not sure I need a 850w as my rig only pulls about 500, maybe 550 tops.
Looks like the OCZ is quite effecient across the range though.

Is there any downside of having a PSU that's a lot higher than the requirement?

Theres no downsides to having a bit too much, also remember its best to run a at around 60% load of a PSU for best efficiency,

This PSU is nice also - http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-006-LA&groupid=701&catid=123&subcat=2057

I read somewhere that all brands can suffer from coil whine. Could it be that Corsair or certain brands have it worse than others?

Its just that with Nvidia cards (sometimes/some of them) theres a strange whining/buzzing sound which goes away if you force Vsync ON, maybe try it?

You see I don't actually have the problem. I just don't want to buy into a brand of PSU's that do.

Ahhhhhhhh,hhhhhhh,ahhhhhhhh.

:)

Umm, You pays your monies and take your chances.

There have been threads about all brands really (except Lepa as they are new) about buzzing etc, I know I can search General Hardware and find a noise complaint for almost any PSU.

But then working out how many complaints there are compared to units sold is difficult as people dont tend to post when everything is perfect.

Yeah I guess so. So it's a matter of finding a brand with the best warranty / quickest swap out. Would Corsair be up there?

They would indeed, I would look at,

Corsair, XFX, OCZ, Antec.

Read in another thread that OCZ and Corsair need to be sent to Netherlands for RMA. Not exactly ideal.

Did notice however there are some online retailers that do offer the buyer the chance to send it back to them instead, covering the entire manufacturers warranty duration.

Thats true. Coolermaster are Netherlands based to.

Bequiet are Germany and there was a thread ages ago about some guy moaning about having to send it there for like £20-30, I even think he had to return the RMA replacement too, making it double trouble:D

I've narrowed it down to the XFX Core 750 or Seasonic X760. The XFX is half the price and is made by Seasonic but isn't modular.

If only I can find someone half decent that stock the XFX
