Hi there

TLCBATR - installed new 1000W PSU, now PC shuts down randomly and is a bugger to switch back on. Here's the details, hoping someone can point me in the right direction;

I've had 2 trouble free years with my original set up (3900XT, RTX3080, 32BG ram, X570-f mobo, H115 AIO, 750W Corsair PSU). I ordered a 5800X3D and a shiny new Asus Rog Strix 1000W gold modular PSU from OC with a view to future proofing against my next GPU upgrade. I eagerly received these last Tuesday, and installed the new 5800X3D on the same day - absolutely pleased with the gain in performance and everything was running fine and dandy for 4 days until I installed the new PSU.....

Now, my PC is deciding to randomly shut itself down with no warning. I cannot switch back on using the power button unless I disconnect the PSU from the mains and reconnect after a few seconds. Even then, I may need to do this several times to get the power button to turn on the system. The strange thing is that the mobo LED "rog strix" logo is lit up and when I press the power button I hear the PSU make a small clicking sound, but alas no start up. Even when I am up and running and shut down Windows correctly, I still have the issue of trying to turn the system back on.

Any thoughts at all please?

Here is my current system spec for ref;

Windows 11
Gigabyte RTX3080 Eagle OC
32GB (2 x 16) Corsair RGB Pro RAM at 3600mhz
Ryzen 5800X3D
Rog Strix X570-F gaming mobo
Rog Strix 1000W 80 plus gold modular PSU
Corsair H115 AIO

Thanks!

just checking, when you installed the new psu, did you use all the included cables from the new box, also when you took out your old psu did you remove all of the old cables, NEVER mix and match cables unless you have 100% checked the pinouts match only then can you use a cable from another psu, also check the kettle lead from the wall to the new psu is fitted with a 13amp fuse as using a cable with a 3a or 5a fuse can casue issues.

other than that it could be a faulty unit, if you are using the correct cables and not mixing any of them between units, tbh your 750w you had is more than enough to drive your new setup unless your looing at a bigger upgrade soon. I would however look at your cables and make sure you are using the correct ones

Thanks Wookiee - I am using all the new and correct cables (the cables are helpfully labelled showing which ends go in where). The previous PSU wasn't modular so all old cables had to be removed.

I am using the power cable that came with it, but I'll check the fuse in there after work in any case

ah right is there anyway to test the rog unit in a diffrent pc just to rule out a bad unit, i mean you could always use your pc in the kitchen too, just to rule out a bad wall socket also, if you get the same thing happing in both instances above i'd look to rma your new psu.

with regard to the included kettle cable you may not be able to look at tthe fuse as the plug may be moulded, but i would say its fitted with the correct fuse never the less

Ah, I should have mentioned in my original post - I have tried connecting to a different wall socket (tried upstairs and downstairs rooms). Unfortunately, I don't have access to another PC that I can take apart to test the PSU in another system (unless I take my laptop apart and try an wedge it in there :D)

@mickyflynn - not tried connecting my old PSU back up yet. But as the system was fine and stable before putting the new one in (with the issue starting immediately after installing the new one was installed), I'm not sure what this would highlight or acheive? Nothing else was changed apart from the PSU at that point

It would tell you if your New psu is faulty.

Sounds like the psu is tripping, maybe even shorting. Do the shut downs occur only when gaming or randomly? What cables are you using to power the graphics card (are they independent?)?

Is hybrid fan mode on or off?

Hi Tetras - it's only happened when gaming (though to be honest my PC is only used for gaming and rarely sits in Windows for longer than a minute or two). Re the cables, two independent PCIe into the RTX 3080.

I've tried the hybrid fan mode both on and off, with the same results.
