New psu to eliminate coil whine

After upgrading my gfx card recently I am now suffering with coil whine from
My Antec Truepower 750w. As well as the noise I also suffer with the card almost stalling when I move the mouse too quickly in game which also gives a change in pitch to the coil whine.

Does anyone have any recommendations for a replacement? I was thinking of the EVGA 850w P2 or something similar.

Thanks in advance

What does it have to power? Can you list your specs please? We had a forum member a few months back had terrible coil whine after he upgraded his gpu to a GTX 970. He also had a Antec Truepower but the 650w version. I recommended him a Superflower Leadex Platinum 550w while they were on offer and as soon as he installed it the coil whine disappeared.

Thanks for the quick response

I have the following

P8P67 m pro
I7 2600k
8gb ram
256Gb ssd Crucial M4 boot drive
128Gb ssd game drive
500Gb data drive
Asus Xonar sound card
MSI Twin Frozr 970
Haf X case and Antec Truepower 750W psu
Budget would be around £125.00
Hope that helps

Thnx Lee

Would the platinum version be any more robust, durable or quieter? I don't mind spending the bit extra.

I have just been looking at the super flower 850w platinum and I am tempted to buy that.

Not keen on paying £10.50 postage though lol

Gibbo did a list of recommended PSU's a while back for coil whine. It's the top post of this sub forum. The links are dead with the new website but the info is still there.

I have no idea how much power I need to be honest. At the moment it seems at times that my card can't grab enough power to do what it needs on screen but I have had 3 different cards and it's done the same with all three.

Maybe your psu is on the way out then. Like I have said, the GTX 970 is a extremely efficient card. To give another example, the pc in my siggy pulls a peak of 452w at the wall (the components draw less than this from the psu itself) and that's only by running Furmark and IBT both at the same time. Normal gaming use is anything up to around 360w with the exception of Anno 2070 which has a power draw of 422w at the wall. Your GTX970 is massively more power efficient than my GTX780 and you can more or less run a pair of 970's for my peak power draw from my single GTX780. The Superflower Leadex Platinum 650w I recommended above is loads more than you need and should sort the coil whine out as well. The other guy I mentioned in my first post had a similar setup to you and he got the Superflower Leadex Platinum 550w and the coil whine disappeared. Have a read here.

You don't need anything like that much power though. A 550w psu would still have loads of spare headroom with your pc. Reviews show that even Sli 970's only have a total power draw of around 450w so yours should be 300w or less. If you want more headroom for piece of mind then take a look at the Superflower Leadex Platinum 650w.

I would take the extra 100W and 5 year extra warranty over a Platinum unit.

650w Superflower Gold running 970SLI here and not a hint of coil whine whatever stress the cards are under.

Quality bit of kit.

I'm more confused than when I started lol

Guessing I can't go wrong with either the EVGA or the Superflower units. The deciding factor will be whether I fancy the drive to OcuK or Bolton tomorrow morning.

They are both essentially the same unit. Both are made by SuperFlower and they also share the same platform and mostly the same internals.

The SuperFlower has a 5 year warranty, whereas the EVGA has a 10 year warranty after you register it.

There are also a couple (Or more) EVGA reps who post on the forum so if you ever get a problem they can help.

Neither psu is a bad choice, but for £1 less I would take the extra warranty and 100W. The difference between Gold and Platinum efficiency is only about 2%.

Update

After all the helpful advice I went for the EVGA 750w G2 and after installing it this afternoon my PC is back to being whisper quiet. I have to say it's a great bit of kit for the money and far better than my Antec Truepower. I probably would have gone for Super Flower if OcuK had been a bit closer but my local retailer doesn't stock Super Flower.

Thanks to everyone who took the time to read the thread and offer advice.

Keep up the good work <3

I've got the 750W unit and I've been very impressed with it. From what I recall, the superflower leadex units have leds you can't turn off. As for the warranty, you can't beat 10 years!

I played WoW last night and the coil whine has gone and also the stuttering frame rate from moving the mouse has gone too. I have the PSU in Eco mode and I am very happy with it.

Thanks again
