I run a GTX260 and my Antec 500W whines really badly when the GPU is stressed. I would like to spend a bit more on a quality PSU, which brand is considered the best for PSU's? Guessing a 750W+ should future proof me for latest ATI 6900?

Intel Core2 Quad 2.4GHz
Nvidia GTX260 896mb xpertvision oem
2x HDD
8GB RAM
DVD drive
No overclocking

Are you sure it's the PSU whining, and not just the fan on your GPU?

Definately the PSU whining, though I guess its possible its only making the noise because the GPU is faulty. I have a cheapo video card that makes the PSU whine ever so slightly, not a great test because its so low spec.

Is it normal for the psu to make any noise when a GPU is running full tilt?

I'm not experienced enough to know for sure, but it just sounds odd. Is the whining a mechanical whining from the PSU, ie. the fan?

If so, I can't understand why the GPU specifically could be causing it, as the PSU fan will adjust its behaviour (if at all) according to the total load, I would have thought - regardless of which component was drawing it?

That's just my own logic though - there are others here who will know significantly more!

Not a fan noise, best description seems to be "coil whine". Found this on google:
"That could be a sign of a over worked psu, there has also been soom reports of antecs producing this noise as they age, some call it "coil whine" and there is no known solution."

I think I'll go for the crossair since I had my fingers burnt with the Antec.

Be aware that Antec don't make their own PSUs, so to me it doesn't make sense to 'blame' Antec.

This is a better option than the Corsair TX 750:
XFX Pro 750W Core Edition 80Plus Bronze £77

as it is cheaper and has higher efficiency, generally the oem has a better reputation, seasonic vs cwt altho i don't think that should have much bearing. the only thing left that needs to be investigated is the cable configuration and lengths.
here are links explaining their cables lengths:

I ended up going for the XFX 750. Also good to know there isn't anything to fear with Antec :) Thanks for all the advice.

I just had to RMA my Antec TruePower New 650w [to a competitor] because of excessive coil whine, I wish I had got a Corsair HX 750W instead,
the Antec cost almost as much at the time of purchase.
