New PSU

Currently have a Corsair TX 750W - no problems at all with it apart from being a bit noisy and being non-modular - more of that in a second.

I'm currently in the process of revamping my PC and the components I've got so far are in my sig... I'm also getting a 7950 with the option of a crossfire upgrade when prices come way down way in the future....or waiting for Kepler - d'oh! I'm pairing that with a BenQ XL2420T at the same time.

The case I'm getting will either be a CM HAF 922 or the Silverstone Raven RV03 which made me think about the possibility of getting a new PSU. My PSU is about 4 years old now and has had a good life :)

I really want to get my case cooled as well as possible when I do buy it and I think a modular PSU would help with this but is it worth the price premium? I don't mind being inventive with cable management on a 'standard' PSU but do these cases have room to manouvre?

So my questions to you fine people are

a) Do I even need to buy a new one considering age and wattage (7950 crossfire sometime down the line)?

b) Modular or standard and what wattage?

modular keeps ur cables tidier. As stulid suggest get the XFX it may be a bit more than other 850w psu's but worth it

I bought the 650W version of this from a competitor recently (I had a voucher to use up :P) and unfortunately I had a lot of fan noise from the start, as if it was clipping something. I was annoyed since that was the reason for upgrading from my previous PSU. Anyway I sent it back explaining the problem and they've taken a while to back to me to tell me they'll refund me minus the postage because there's 'nothing wrong with the PSU'. Now this wound me up since it WAS faulty, I'll have to pay £8 and they'll sell it to some poor bugger. I've sent an email back explaining my disagreement but I'm yet to have a reply.

Anyway rant over, the reason I say this is that the OP wanted a quiet PSU also, for that reason I'd recommend the Corsair AX series since they are modular re-branded Seasonics and very quiet since the fan does not come on unless it's experiencing high load (or so I've read). They are also fully modular unlike the XFX which has a fair few cables permanently attached (Though when I installed mine I had only one attached cable left over). I plan to get an AX-650 when the whole return saga is over :D

i would go for a modular psu (for neatness) but take this below into account from an article thats not hard to find on the net

Despite modular power supplies being a hot product, don't be quick to grab the up-take. The companies we spoke to told us that modular power supplies are less efficient than those that have their cables hard-wired. The reason being that the extra connection you make, adds resistance, and hence, increases heat and reduces efficiency.

Enermax, Seasonic, and Corsair all told us that if you're looking to maximize efficiency, go for a non-modular PSU.
