New pump/reservoir

Hi,

I'm planning on modifying most of my water-cooling loop as at the moment it is still pretty basic, and I am getting bored of it. I have already decided upon the new tubing coolant etc. and theme. I am just confused as to which reservoir/pumps to go for as I currently have the most basic pump / reservoir

I can push to a little over £100, but it would have to come with a good reason why. I have seen some XSPC pump / bay reservoirs but I have heard bad things of them. I would prefer a bay reservoir if that helps. My case is themed UV Blue if that is an option/preference.

Thankyou,

Wiry

D5 with alpha cool top for £85 is the best pump you can buy (within reason obviously)

As for res, go for whichever one looks best as they are all pretty much the same in terms of function.

The D5 is probably more than required for your needs, but there's no harm in havin extra power as you can turn it down and it'll be silent :)

Thankyou. I've noticed the d5 has 1/2" barb fittings. How do I go about this as I haven't seen many components with this thread ?

It has G1/4 inlets and outlets which means you can add whatever fittings you like to it.

What's your current tubing size?

I don't know if this sounds stupid or not, but just being looking at these pump tops. What do they actually do and couldn't you just run the pump without one ? Or am I missing something big here.....

you have an EK basic kit.

the pump you have is more than sufficient.

in reality, you do not need an £85 pump solution that is designed to operate a multiple block/rad, high restriction watercooling system.

if you had a triple radiator and a cpu/gpu watercooling loop, then yeah a D5 with an aftermarket top would be an excellent addition

but you could easily add another radiator and a gpu watercooling block and still use that pump/res combo.

my advice would be this: your HAF X supports a triple radiator [120.3 / 360] radiator in the roof of it. this means you are open to massive cooling capability.

I would buy a cheap 360 [an XSPC EX rad would be a good idea here]
and sell your 120 rad.

keep it like this and either find a block for your gpu or watercool your next gpu as you would have the headroom there and it would be very upgrade proof.

hope that helps.

rjk is correct, I run a D5 vario with a 360 rad, 480 rad + CPU block and 250 tube res with no issues. I previously ran this with the addition of x2 480 blocks + mobo block.

And a £85 high end pump solution is simply not required considering your whole kit only cost a fraction more.

Thanks for the answers guys. You're probably both correct. The reason I was edging towards the pump / reservoir because I would've liked the reservoir to be in a 5.25" bay, but never mind. Is the XSPC 360 EX rad suitable for my HAF X's roof? And I like running my fans slow if that gives greater info :p Thankyou guys

if you want to run your fans slow and still have performance, choose a low fpi rad.

there are two kinds of rads.

High FPI means a lot of fins per inch. a dense packed rad which needs powerful fans to push the air through.

low FPI means fewer fins per inch. not so densely packed but works best for silence.

now dont be put off by low fpi rads. some of them are great.

an EX 360 is a high fpi rad that will work well with high performance fans.

a black ice SR-1 is a good low fpi rad that when used in conjunction with a good fan like the Gentle Typhoon 1850 on a fan controller or the Gentle Typhoon 1450 if you want silence and dont want a fan controller. This is where the best performance and noise ratio lies.

any 360 rad will fit in the roof of your HAF X :)
