I recently built my new pc based on a quad core Q6600 cpu, Asus P5Q Pro motherboard, Geil Black dragon 4gig DDR2 6000 and ATI HD4850GT GFX, since day one i've found it sluggish and slow compared to my older Athlon 64 4200 X2 / Asus A8N SLI with 3gig of DDR400 but i haven't really bothered investigating as of yet, however, i'm getting software hangs / freezes at the simplest operations like opening more than one internet window and it's starting to bug me now.

What possible causes could there be? Bios sees the Q6600 and 4gig ram as normal as does CPU Z, it is all completely stock.

Thanks

Nobody any ideas?

It just seems to be windows explorer that keeps freezing, i can use anything that's open at the time, i.e messenger or mozilla. explorer has actually frozen as i type this grrr

My first port of call would be a OS reinstall. Don't necesarily put it down to the hardware straight away. Format and reinstall (after backing stuff up of course) and get some antivirus software on there before you connect to the internet to be on the safe side.

Other than that I would suggest installing your OS on a diff HDD incase it is the drive that has bad sectors?

check your temp or reseat the proc HSF.the proc will throttle its speed down if its overheating this may cause the sluggishness and freezing.

Which PSU do you have to power your new rig? Hangs and slowdowns can often be attributed to a faulty or under performing PSU.

I'm going to do that tonight, i've resorted to starting windows in safe mode lol, and guess what, it's stable :D

I reseated the HSF yesterday, made no difference.

Thermaltake 500w i think

Well, i'm about to reformat (just backing files up atm) and i'll be back later on to see if it feels any quicker.

Have you had any bsods or data corruption?
Did you install the correct chipset drivers.

Have had a "bad" install myself a couple of times. Just doesnt run right for no reason.

If its still the same after fresh install i would try memtest and a session of orthos. Check all the temps out too of course.

Run hd tune too to check that the hard drive is performing as it should :)

i had a p5k recently , had serious hardware issues with over 4gb ram , wldnt hold bios settings , kept crashing etc

id imagine its a hardware problem , as mine took around 1 hour n a half to install vista with a quad extreme.
