New R9 390 problems?

Just got a new Asus R9 390 OC Strix. First impressions were -- wow, it idles at 60 degrees, even with the fan at 500 RPM. Assumed it was supposed to idle at 0db, considering my 970 Strix (replaced because I bought a 1440p Freesync) ran at 34 degrees idle with the fan completely off...

I install GPU Tweak II, turn on the basic Game Mode with 0db and now the fan drops to 0% and it idles around 60 still.

Ran Unigine Valley - scores match review benchmarks and load temp is 84 degrees, so at least load temps aren't bad.

I boot up Elder Scrolls Online. Everything seems fine, runs about as well as my 970, but with Freesync now. About 2 minutes later there's a horrible sound in my headphones, black screen and the last sound continues to drone on. I reset the PC -- it boots up but no picture. I reset again, no signal... numlock turns on and off, so I guess the PC has booted. Force a shutdown holding the power button, turn back on, and now it boots normally.

Maybe GPU Tweak is causing the problem? I've uninstalled it and I haven't had an issue YET, but that kind of freeze doesn't seem like just a one off type.

Any ideas? I have a 650w Corsair RM Gold. Single 12v rail, using a single PCIExpress Cable (which has branching 2x 6+2 connectors) to power the GPU.

Never had a single crash in my life with the Asus 970 (had for a year), and the new 390 had a scary one! :/ Fresh install of windows 10 as well, because I wanted to avoid driver conflicts (I know they are unlikely, but I'm stuck in my ways).

Seems it will idle at 50 degrees if I leave it for a while. Must just go down slowly because the fans go to 0% <65 degrees. Load temps are 80 degrees max in games, and I hit 87 degrees after 30 mins of Valley Benchmark. Seems about the same as all the Asus 390 Reviews out there.

I'm just really paranoid about the crash that I had. Never experienced one like that before. If I have any more of them in the next 2 weeks I'll consider returning it for different brand -- apparently the MSI/Sapphires are much better temperature wise as well. I expected more from Asus considering how much they bigged up the cooler... yet it's actually the hottest 390.

I'm hoping that it was just GPU Tweak II causing issues. I've removed it and now just rely on the base drivers to manage fan speed/clocks.

My 390 Strix is the same regarding temps. Idles quite high, above 60c sometimes, but the fans aren't spinning B) Load temps are in the mid/high 80s, but I can't hear the fans at all. The fans can (but never) spin very fast, but its uncomfortably loud. Make yourself a custom fan profile if you want lower temps, but I don't think its necessary.

1. Use two seperate cables from your PSU for each PCI-E connection on your card.

2. Install the latest beta drivers from AMD.com

3 Enjoy
