New ram = Crashes

I've bought 2 x 1GB DDR400 of Crucial ram for my NF7-s V2 (old school I know:D) but since installing it I have been having problems with random crashes and BSOD.

I ran Memtest86 overnight and the ram passed twice with no errors, so I don't think the problem is the Ram but could be my motherboard. i've had no Ram problems before now, when I had 512 Mb of DDR 333 installed.

Could it be the memory timings causing the problem?? I don't really know a lot about timings so some help would be appreciated.

If you have any other thoughts as to what to try I would really be greatful.

Hi,

Get CPU-Z and run that. It will show you what the memory is running at. Then compare this to the box / review of your stuff to see if they are the same. Also check the voltages.

If there is a difference then either 'load optimised defaults' or manually set the ram timings / voltages.

Can you try the memory in other slots / configurations? (single / duel channel)?

Good luck.

Hi Shrapnel

I hade them in slots 1 & 2 first off but moved them to 1 & 3 when the issues began.

I'll download CPU-Z and see what I come up with (Thanks for the suggestion).

Any suggestions on which timings to change first, I've never done that before??

Well couple of things to add, you were previously running a 333MHz-FSB I presume so your motherboard's northbridge would have found it easier as would your CPU.

I've had some similar problems running dual-channel DDR400 in an nForce2 system, maybe the processors don't like running that FSB (assuming it's not a native 400MHz-FSB chip) or the board may have a slightly faulty memory slot (not totally uncommon on some nForce2 boards).

If it's not something simple you can sort with BIOS settings then perhaps try running one stick of DDR400 @ 400MHz in the slot closest to the CPU, if that passes stability test try the same thing with the second stick. If that also passes then try both again.

Perhaps its just a case of your memory needing more voltage or perhaps the timings set correctly?.

I ran CPU-Z as suggested, wow what a great programme, and got the following timings:

CAS Latency - 3
Ras to Cas delay - 3
Ras Precharge - 3
Cycle time - 8
Voltage - 2.5

So i'm assuming my current timings are 3-3-3-8, where do i go to check what they should be (sorry i'm sure that's a really noob question but i've never had memory problems before:rolleyes:)?

Another strange thing, CPU-Z reports my two sticks in slots 1 & 2 but they are currently in 1 & 3, to see if they are any better, is that a problem???

Really appreciate your help so far.

Timings look fine. They're pretty standard for 1gb sticks of PC3200.

Have you set the correct memory voltage?

Hi Cob

The voltage is showing as 2.5V on CPU-Z, should i be changing this anywhere??

Sorry as mentioned I'm new to Memory problems.
