New RAM or add more to existing setup?

Hi Everyone,

I purchased some 'Black Mamba' 2x4gb 1600mhz sticks for my new build. They turned out to be faulty, so I returned them.

I'm using the sticks left over from my previous rig. 'Patriot Viper Xtreme 1600mhz 2x4gb'.

However, after reading into to, I don't feel comfortable in setting the ram to 1.65v's which is required for it to run at 1600. I'm currently running them at 1333 (9-9-9-24 I believe) @ 1.5v's. It doesn't OC very well at all either.

So my question is purely from a gaming POV would it be beneficial to:
- buy new (Higher speed) RAM?
- Add matching sticks to my current setup to get 16gb?
- Do nothing and save the money?

Thanks guys.
Any comments would be highly appreciated!

The benefit from faster ram isn't that great, it is there, but we're talking an extra couple frames at best (unless gaming at really low resolutions and low settings)

Your much better served to spend the amount you may have spent on ram on a faster gpu.

I also think that 8gb is more than enough for gaming.

Also, I thought 1.65v was safe daily for ram? I've been running my g skill at 1.72v since i7 860, never had a problem :s

Personally, I would sell the ram you have and get a faster set. However, for gaming I think it's a lot of hassle for miniscule gains.

Sorry I forgot to mention I'm on Ivy. As the memory controller is on the CPU is not wise to go over 1.5v's as you can potentially ruin your chip. Although I did run it on my 3570k for over a year.

As for putting the money towards a GPU, I'm planning on buying a HD 9970 when its out and putting it under water. I'm just considering if its worth it for me or not atm.

Might just do it and buy some 1800 or 2133 RAM and see how it works
